Hi all,

O.k what's the accepted best practice when re-fitting a K1100 cylinder head. Do you oil the bolt threads or not?

The Clymer manual specifically says to oil the threads and under the bolt heads, but the BMW manual does not mention it at all.

Thanks

Mike

I only have the Clymer manual which does mention it.

I have always oiled treads when refitting except where it says not to, but only after cleaning bolt treads and then only sparingly because you don't want enough oil in there to create hydraulic pressure under the bolt and also too much can give a false [lower] reading when torquing up the bolts.

It was the issue of incorrect torque setting that resulted in the question.

The BMW manual uses a torque value followed by a two stage angle of rotation, so I would have thought oil would have compromised that.
