Yesterday Sunday 17th Nov. after 5 weeks of agonising I bit the bullet.
I bought an '87 K100RT for $500 aus. It is all there I think.

And now for something completely different. 2013-112

My camera was stolen a few weeks ago so phone images will have to do for now.

And now for something completely different. 2013-113

Story is that it is ex Police. Speedo graduations say that is not true so speedo replaced? Therefore
no idea of real mileage. I will have to dig around for POs to get the back story.

And now for something completely different. 2013-114

Interesting Zorst, One off? Or does anyone recognise it? This may be for sale, watch this space!

And now for something completely different. 2013-115

Some of the bits lying around. How much are panniers worth? Down boys, they are going on Pfeil!

I pay on wed and pick up by the weekend. To complicate things I am not "home" so have no space for her.

A friend has offered his back shed, Thanks Bryn, will check that out tomorrow.

Next post will be about the "custom", I would appreciate your feedback. See Ya soon, gotta feed the doG.

Title explanation.

NOTHING using the Brick driveline can be completely different but I'm sticking with it

because AFIK no-one HERE has done this.

My options were/still are  1. Total restoration to as new.
                                         2. Strip off the fairings etc and sell to fund a naked replica.
                                         3. Custom, "bobber", cafe racer (call it what you will.)
                                         4. Austalianize, on similar lines to this

And now for something completely different. Dscf2210

This bike is Graham ..? s' bike and he won Rat bike award at the recent Far Kairn Rally.
Not a true "Rat" in my humble but one of only two along Rat lines. Mine woulda' won but I arrived late missing the
chance of many votes!
Grahams' bike and the another similar one have been adapted slowly over years of ownership to suit the owner.
If someone has a better photo/s showing some of the unique adaptations please post them so folk get an idea
of what i'm on about.

Austalianized is my term for a bike similar to the design brief of the GS series ie: long distance all roads tourer.
The trouble with the GS is it's a bike first then, you hang all the essential luggage etc. on making for more weight than
an integrated set up.

So my idea (it's still only an idea) is not to make a better GS but to make an OzS.

K100 OzS. You heard it here first.

Graham has a fair sized collection of bikes of various ages, inc quite a few BMWs.  Most are very well presented original bikes.   But he likes to ride too and doesn't mind a bit of dirt.  The K is his rally hack that does all the kms, the others come out on sunny days.

Fabulous. Thanks Chas, That conveys beautifully the general theme.

I'm gunna add "lightness" by integrating as much as possible but overall

it will look BUSH. I've made the decision now but there were two other options

Option  5. Get it reliable looking OK and sell to make beer money.

               6. Sell all as parts. They gotta be real bad to do that.

This will not be my ideal future bike by about 100 kilograms but ya gotta start somewhere.

Thanks to the forum I know I can do this for minimal outlay, all $s will be reported here hopefully.

Roll on Wednesday!

I just parted with the $500 and discovered a few things i had'nt seen before.

Recently I checked out a bike for RobinW and recall giving a pretty comprehensive

report on the $3000 asking price machine. This (My) bike was a no-brainer price wise

and I hardly checked anything out, Ha Ha, did'nt even start the engine, mind you the battery (new)

was out. So it has a knock just off idle, monkey nuts or output shaft?

Only one pannier, damn, now I'm in the market for its' mate.

The plan outlined above is now under review! I pick it up tomorrow, ride it 2kms to a

friends shed and then i'll do a full rethink on the K100 OzS idea.

good pics will be posted in the next couple of days.

Thanks for the interest, I value your input and advice, please keep it coming.

PO paid $550 not $500. Tank weld repair $150. new battery $120 (ripped off)

$80 for a condition report which concluded NOT a viable proposition, $3500 est.

This was by independent BMW mech Lee McPeake, a guy I have met and have respect for.

Soooo..... we shall see soon.

A knock just off idle can be just that the throttle bodies need sync and that 1 or 2 cylinders are getting more fuel than the others and very uneven running till the others start getting fuel and because the revs are low it causes the unevenness to be exagerated.

Thursday dawned so time to ride the beast 1 km to Bryns' shed.

1 km isn't far enough to tell much but I was underwhelmed to say the least.

The motor was a DOG but got there, just. Low fuel and weak battery probably.

So that was a downer and the mood continued rest of the day as I stripped stuff off.

WTF have I done!

Today was a new day thank goodness, as she yielded to my spanners wielded.

$500 bucks what was I thinking? For the most part it's VERY good, obvious issues.

Discs all round , tyres, spline etc.... gunna cost.

New hoses all round a plus, AH HA, 2 split TB /plenum rubbers , the noise off idle

was the suck of those 2, ties in with Ricks' theory, non?

I put my jumper battery on and she fired up immediately, ran good at idle then when warm

I revved her out and was good, this is before I found the TB rubbers cracked of course.

So yesterday she was scrap, today It"s on, Operation Bush Pig reporting for duty SIR.

And now for something completely different. 2013-119

Spotted this on Sunday, sounded sweet too.

Ask for specific pics. All appears in good nick from cursory inspection, paint looks better in photo

than reality but prob non standard colour anyway? Here first then into the for sale section.

I have been busy with other stuff so no posts for a while. It took a few days to get to this.

And now for something completely different. P1070112

Taking tips from lots of guys on this forum saw me bag and label components for assembly later. I have been working through the bags inspecting and cleaning and the list is slowly growing. Alternator is getting new bearings and brushes.
Wheel, steering and swingarm bearings will be replaced.

And now for something completely different. P1070113

Two Throttle body to plenum rubbers were split, this is the worst one. 4 newies arrived from Munich M/Cycles
Perth WA. The price difference to Motobins/Works wasn't enough to sway me from using them in this instance.
I want them to still be in business if or when I break down on the Birdsville or Tanami Tracks. Their delivery is astonishingly
RAPID. Best so far Perth to Adelaide 22.5 hours from clicking send on my laptop to in my hand at the letterbox! Previous Best was 2.5 Days Perth to  Branxholm Tasmania.

And now for something completely different. P1070114

Another tip from the forum, do something that gives you"instant" results like above. These headers and silencer took
about 3 hours to this stage. Ignore the "blueing" on the silencer I think it's me with the camera. Another few hours
and these will be good enough for me ie. easy to keep clean means they are more likely to be cleaned.
And now for something completely different. P1070115

Lots of oil round the clutch housing, new seal and "o" ring needed.

And now for something completely different. P1070116

Another oily mess needing attention. PO has the oil level way high, top of sight glass.

So lots to do but lots of progress made in one month, inspired by all the previous renovators here, thanks one and all.

Progress has slowed for the festive season naturaly and also I have to pay the rent!
The deal with the shed use is to fix the daughters car, V6 camry '89. Oil leak rear onto ex manifold.
Almost on top of that now so will be more K soon.
Meanwhile... some good

And now for something completely different. P1070118

Discs are right on the limit, same as my K75, i'm gunna run them for now 'cos pads are new.
This is one of the colours this bike will sport.

Now some ... Bad!

And now for something completely different. P1070119

Easy fix though, I have a MIG!

Haven't pulled the clutch yet Rob, my 24V rattle gun hasn't coordinated with my visits to the shed.
Love my toys.. I mean tools!

More "bling" to inspire the build.
Wheels cleaned up well.

And now for something completely different. P1070120

One of the advantages of BMW restoration is the quality of original manufacture. Sand cast parts can look
terrible, for instance, but don't take much to resurect.

And now for something completely different. P1070121

A long soak in degreaser gave the footpeg bkts this dull grey colour on left. Wire wheels (shown) in a cordless drill and an hours work produced this. Steel wool and soap is next then autosol rub will give a nice finish which is easy to clean in the future. I will weld some custom fittings to these bkts first then do the final polish.

The theme is Australian tourer, K100 OzS, hence these colours.

And now for something completely different. P1070122

Trust me it looks green in the "flesh". The rest of the bike will follow this colour scheme.
Interesting fact, Australia is one of very few countries to NOT use their flag colours for their sporting teams.
Front wheel is almost ready for similar paint job.
Cheers,   Ghost

Thanks guys for the comments, It has been fun, freed as I am of having to achieve a certain look.
I have done a lot of spray painting in my previous career so playing around with the pinstriping is making me want to go "artistic" next, with a brush, a la Pro Hart! A girlfriend had a  Guzzi 750 S that used to be owned by Pro
she didn't get the painted tank however, wonder what happened to it? One can never have too many ants!

Nice one mate.

I am at the beginning of a very similar process....Taking the original GS brief, army style pragmatism and dash of Aussy-rat/rally rig as my inspiration.

Our thinking is fairly aligned it seems and I very much look forward to following your progress.

I will start my build report in the next few weeks, as I have now finally moved back to Sydney and am in the process of sorting out some workshop space. May be able to get free space in return for some basic motorcycle maintenance courses/workshops any maybe building them an aquaponics system (another of my passions).

I have spent more money on perhaps a worse condition set of donner bikes (3 K100's and a K1100) but am still very happy chappy. You got a bloody bargain though thats for sure.

You keeping the original wheels/brakes/forks? What tyres you considering? Anyone have any thoughts on a dual sport-GS type tyre for the k1100/100?

Dualsport tyres are on my list, thanks AL will check out the Avons.
My build HAS to be low budget so unless a 21" front spoked wheel
with brake, attached to long travel forks falls in my lap, standard is how I will go.

As if i don't have enough to do latest plan is

Relocate battery (slim AGM or similar) above fuel injectors.
Relay box goes to false "tank"/storage compartment.
Fuel tank fabricated in space vacated by the above, also forming front of rear mudguard.
Tool kit in the area below the crank cover acting also as engine protection in case of a fall.
View of oil level glass considered.

The reason for the above is to lower and centralise the mass to optimise handling on crap/dirt roads.
As I explained earlier this is not going to be a "GS". Some dirt road capability is all I want since I invariably end up on them because I hate backtracking, love the "short cut" and we still have acres of them!

Yes the current R1200GS are about the same weight as I could get the K100OzS to but that's still 100 kgs
more than this 62yo (and rising) wants to manhandle when the going gets tough. The future for me will be a
single cylinder chain drive, GRRR, light, FUN to ride bike. The airhead and the 75C will still have their place, not sure about the K100OzS till I build and ride it.

Ironically the inspiration for the above latest (Tell him he's dreamin' ) comes from you guys who go the "Cafe Racer" route! Everyone seems to think that open space between the frame above g/box to rear wheel is the "look". I think it looks crap and that is the perfect place to put weight, ie. low down within the wheelbase.
So big thanks to you Cafe Boys.

Ghost

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.

Why must folks who see a K made into something resembling a GS think the owner wants to go to Dakar and be competitive.

thanks Ghosty. well said.

Front wheel cleaned up beautifully so I started to polish the rim. 7 hours later I had a finish I was happy with.
Raw finger tips and the prospect of 7 hours for the rear wheel made me paint the rear first, as above.
Finally the front is done. Challenging oneself in different skills is what life is about, and learning from mistakes is all part of the experience. so the front should be better... guess what? yeah new mistakes ha ha , love it.

I am almost at halfway point thanks to the forum renovators.... all of you really but hope you don't mind me mentioning a couple? Oldgoat, Halo, Charlie99 and MikeP. The last 2 because I am using the former's philosophy
and the later's attention to detail. I'm still learning and thank ALL who reported ( I read them all, sad but true, on a positive note I have "given up" TV ! )

Nice work Ghosty, I like them both but marginally prefer the shiny rim.

I really like them both too. I wonder whether one or the other will look the best once a tyre is there for contrast?

Really nice job.

Thanks guys and good point Mike, Brand new rubber will enhance one or t'other.
Next time I will take all the casting crap off the ribs, and use Bear pinstripe tape!
Could be the weather variations between wheels but the Bear tape has less bleed.

Why 2 different tapes?  Availability on the day, c'est la vie.

Green chosen is way too dark maybe? Plus side it's a Holden colour C137, '96 Commodore on,
How Aussie Is that ? for a GM company who are closing the plant in a couple of yrs?
Look up Laurence Hartnett's bio for the truth about the "Australian " car ... 1948!

Really nice work mate!  The polished lip wheel reminds me a bit of Fuchs.  Cool  Looking forward to seeing them on the bike!

I do like the all yellow (gold?) rim, but undoubtedly the polished rim wouldn't suffer so much when changing tyres.

Nice style, Ghosty, keep it up,  And now for something completely different. 112350

Finally the frame leaves the motor. Been busy with other stuff.
Dunk the headstem in degreaser this way.

And now for something completely different. P1070137

Frame washed and assessed. Carefull cutting with the angle grinder and the back loop is off.
Sorry no photos. Paint is ok apart from the rear section where lots of mods will be done anyway
so i'm only going to touch up a couple of issues and leave the original alone, with a buff.
Took the compliance plate off, 2 pop rivets, because it was out of shape (one corner folded under!)
and sitting proud of the frame. May have been tampered with or changed? Don't care but in back of mind
for future investigation.
Motor got a real good clean, lots of dirt in the casting ribs etc., alternator drive pulled for new seal,
clutch area de oiled too.
Soon I will slip the starter, alternator, throttle bodies, air etc back on, ie. she will start to come back to life.

Wow. wish I could come spend a few weeks.

i love that sh1t.

Compliance numbers should be stamped on the frame as well.

Love the colours on those rims. Did you lay off the Baileys for a few days? Delicate work that colour on color.
Or was it cointreau? or kahlua or mothers milk you had mixed up in that bottle down Tottenham way?
Regardless mate, you are doing what you want and we are all following along.
top shelf.

doing a damn fine job there Ghost, really like the polished edges on the rims , and as mentioned , need to contrast it with rubber and rotors in place.
and as you say the battery space can look clean when empty , but you do lose ballast. fill it with a secondary reserve tank for long trips.
