I noticed today that the oil light in the instrument cluster was faintly lit today. Here are some datsa points:
- instrument light bulbs upgraded to LED
- oil changed 2500km ago
- oil still visible in middle of sight glass

My question is if the sensor is starting to fail or if this is symptomatic of something else?

I would guess you find the problem at the sensor, or a partially shorted (to ground) wire
between the sensor and the cluster.....disconnect the switch to check.
But if high mileage/unknown history, it won't hurt to have the pressure checked.

wonder if the cable to the sensor has been crushed somewhere .....?
maybe through the timing cover to the HES (hall effect sensors)  ?

Another Data Point.

Yesterday was raining quite hard when the light was faintly lit. Subjectively the light seemed to grow in intensity but was never 100% on. Today is dry and no light. I am thinking this is pointing towards the connection between the wire and sensor, or just the sensor.

Thoughts?

I would guess that the moisture have partially shorted the connector(s) at the sensor.
Clean the outside of the sensor, give the connectors a sqiurt of WD40 (or similar),
put back the rubber cap...wait for the next shower...or use the garden hose.

Any thoughts on dielectric grease in the rubber cap after the connectors are cleaned?

LED bulbs sometimes glow when used in a circuit with an earthed on/off switch such as the oil pressure one. I have LED interior lights fitted to my car and sometimes they glow at night. I think that because they need so little power, they can find a slight earth just from moisture in the air.
I don't think that there is anything wrong with your oil system at all.

D.e.grease could be a good idea where the i.d. of the rubber cap contacts the sensor,
and where the wire enters the rubber cap.....used sparingly.

Dielectric grease often makes more problems that it solves, if you use to much of it...

Salting the roads can cause problems like this as the salt causes a connection if it isnt cleaned off or gets under the rubber cap.

The roads have been sprayed with brine recently as temperatures approach freezing.
