My K100RS was running like a pig for a few weeks and it coincided exactly with the weather getting colder so I just wrote it off as just some warming up issues. A few days ago I got the bright idea to look at the fuel filter while the bike was running and it was coming apart at the seams under pressure! I was running it on a near-daily basis like this for at least a few weeks. I swapped it out for a brand new one yesterday along with a new set of sparkplugs and of course it is running like a dream now.

One question, though - I'm curious whether this could have caused any problems with anything else that I should check. Did it stress out the fuel pump? Could it have screwed up any of the injectors?

I doubt it would have created problems for the pump or injectors but because it was split it could have been releasing all that crud it filtered out back into the tank so it may pay to keep an eye on it in the near future as it very well could clog up again.
BTW I do hope you were using the correct aluminium filter and not one of the plastic ones that will explode with the pressure.

Sounds like you were running a fuel filter not designed for the pressure of fuel injected systems.  Brand and part number?  Metal or plastic?

It was i big batch of bad OEM fuel filters that did have a weak seam around
early nineties.............most of these should be out of the shelves now, but........

The fuel filter in the bike was the aluminum OEM one, but the date stamped on it was from 1995. I found a service bulletin about just this problem with pre-1997 filters - http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bvogel/K100/download/K100-service-bulletins-and%20special-tools/P36-97.pdf

The new filter I just put in was an OEM one manufactured a good bunch of years after 1997, so no worries there. Thanks!
