There is some insulation between the air box and throttle bodies but I don't recall any on the right side that is similar in position to the left side you describe.

As annoying as those things can be I wouldn't have done that so I am now sure the previous owner can claim that dubious privilege as there hasn't been one there since I had my K1100.

The PO had all the work done at Motohansa and after their tender mercies for 100K it was time to unload it to anybody that would give him the pittance he was asking. A classic case on don't take it to your dealer but a good independent mechanic. That in itself is a difficult task.

Upload a picture of it....might be easier for other members to help you identify it and then tell you where it goes. On my K100 there is a small triangular bit of foam rubber on the right hand side which doesn't make any sense - until you find where it goes and then it is obvious! Don't know if it is the same for the K1100 or not.

It never ceases to amaze me how obvious it looks when you remove something and then, even after a short time, how confusing it is to get the orientation/location right when you come to reassemble. Like others, I have taken to photographing every thing, just in case...but I guess that is 6 weeks too late for you! It has saved me a great deal of head scratching over the years (a major plus of digital cameras)

20th birthday and it could very well still be in good shape.  The filters on our bikes are huge!
