Im about to get my bike an MOT.  The rubber bush at the bottom of the damper inside the spring has split in half. 2 Qs..is this a fail?  And, is it possible to replace the bush as the damper and spring are otherwise sound.

Probably would be a fail but thats my opinion from Australia
I replaced one about 2 years ago and had to make a tool to do it but most engineering shops would have the tools already and should be able to do it easily. I used the red Nolathane and it is better than a rubber bush.

Just my 2 cents
If any part of the shock absorber is in that condition..get a new one

It only shows the inner condition outside
Same with the springs in the fork

And do it complete rear and front at once
All other option make no sence

At least here as we like to use the bikes up to max.

rough calculation (prices 2014 Ger.)

Wilbers ECO Line (enough for standard use)  , Wilbers progressive springs and oil:   just arround 400€

Are you talking about the bump-stop rubber that can be slid up and down the shaft?

If so, remove what's left and I doubt that the MoT tester will even know that one used to be there.

Mike is right it will pass the MOT but why is it damaged? What brand of shock?
Are you sure the damper and spring are OK?
If so,   no worries , as we say here.

I think that they usually perish and split. I've always just ditched them once that happens and never had a problem come MoT.

Spot on MikeP.  It was perished.  Pulled a piece out from behing the spring and it crumbled to dust.  It passed the MOT though. (Should I say, the shock passed....steering didnt).  Still, its been sat idle for ages and the steering should be sorted soon for a re-test.
