I know this has been done to death but i'll ask anyway.

What oil do i use in the gearbox and final drive?

The manual says use the same...is this right?

Also in total i think i'll only need 1.25 uk pints so 2 litres would be enough?

I don't mind spending a bit of money on good oil so what can i get and where is the best place to get it...i'm in the UK.

Mike

Halfords. Castrol EP90.

They also do their own brand EP80/90.

Both are GL5.

Yes, the Castrol 80/90 is a proven winner. I like it, and change the transmission fluid every year. Rear end is not as big a deal IMO, change every other year is fine (inspection 1).  Wink

I use Shell 80/90 probably comes from the same barrel as the castrol.
Some use a synthetic and claim smoother gear changes but I don't think it makes a difference to the life of the box. I pulled one apart that had 300,000km on it and what a waste of time it was near as good as new despite the clunky changes.

BMW sell both an 80W90 GL5 dinosaur-based and a 75W140 GL5 full-syntetico, both from Castrol - and not to be confused with the SAF-XO full synth 75W90 for Hexheads and newer Ks. Any quality GL5 of various viscosity will do. I use 75W140 in my bikes, in the middle and at the back.
