Are ALL K100 series tanks interchangeable? There appears to be 2 different mounting methods, but are they still compatible?

Yes and no, with the emphasis on no.  The 85 and earlier tanks had a system where the rear bolted to the frame while the 86+ bikes had the posts that fit into grommets on the frame.

The tank shape is the same though.

And then there's the difference in fuel level senders....

Damn, I dont think they are interchangable....I just stripped the paint of the wrong tank! Blast!

Anyone want to buy a bare/stripped tank to suit a 1986+ K100?

No they are not easy to adapt, the rear mount is very different and the fuel level sensor is very different so the electrical connection needs to be changed.

Hey Floyd, what sort of fuel level sender does that tank have, I have an 85 leaky tank but has the two grommet
holders like later ones, and a fuel sender in the middle of the base at the back, with a floaty ball thingo. If it sounds like yours, we may be able to do a deal.

Hey RT, I think Floyd allready got a tank like yours...which he's trying to sell.
The changeover for the different tank models was 05/85.

hey Floyd ...
don't forget that the instruments - gauges also have different electronics for the different styles of tanks ...more specifically the type of fuel level sensor on each one

so no good putting a later set of instruments on ....without the modifications or changes that need to happen to accommodate the tank sensor

just a heads up

Tks Inge that was what I was hoping for. Mine has leaked twice and looks a bit odd with
loads of black fiberglass lumps.
I'll PM you Floyd.

Yeah mate, that sounds about right. Will send you some pics asap.

Bloody dick head I am, should have found this out before stripped the paint off, alas, at least its still perfectly usable and just needs some new paint Smile

Oooooh thanks for that one Charlie. Will need to do a bit of reasearch as I was planning to use the gauges off the 86 as they are in almost new shape. Perhaps I can modify the connections, or simply using the 86 gauge case and clear bits with the older internals?

We'll see.....

Oh the joys.... Smile
