Hi,

I just got another fuel tank for my Ex-Police bike, because I would really like to be able to fill in more than 14 liters.

But the one I got has a hole in it, the local "blacksmith" is able to veld it, but what about the isolation on the bottom of the tank itself?

I have to remove it, to check the rest and give him enough space to work, but where can I get a new one?
Is it necessary?

Cheers

Peter

You can buy it from BMW.......kr,kr,kr.
Needed? I'll guess your tank can get awful hot without = roasted nuts.

Another product other than Dynamat is Thermo-Tec reflective insulation.  It is not sound/thermo insulation like Dynamat, just thermo.  As a result, it is thinner and cheaper.

Another solution might be to fashion a Johnny Blanket http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=580.msg2796#msg2796.  You can buy 24" wide double-sided foil insulation at Home Depot (or Danish equivalent of hardware Chain store) and make a "blanket" to go underneath your tank. It does a good job of controlling the heat. Lay the blanket under your tank which covers from the steering head back - then trim the sides to match the bottoms of the battery covers. This will insulate the tank from the engine heat and keep the heat from escaping onto your legs between the battery covers and the tank.

On one of my Ks I used some synthetic rubber and reinforced foil firewall insulation. It has adhesive on one side so I doubled it up. Here's a picture of a leftover scrap:
