Interesting technology to use air. Mack/Volvo has been using similar technology in their diesels for near 25 years but with solenoid operation not air and I was wondering if the air is controlled by solenoid then there is an added step.
When I worked for a Volvo truck dealer we spent a couple of days at the assembly plant learning and as Mack is owned by Volvo we were shown some trucks on the dyno and the HP gains were amazing as the valve timing was altered at various engine speeds.
I don't know if there was ever any follow through but there was some talk about GM doing some experimental work with their Blown 2 stroke diesels and solenoid actuated valves.
I always expected to see some flow over into petrol engines but nothing till now. Mind most of the manufacturers have many tricks up their sleeves ready to use as it becomes necessary.

i always questioned why solenoid actuated valves are not used in production vehicles.
very cost and weight effective to get rid of ; cams, chain, sprockets, tensioners, springs.
you get the best of all worlds like variable cam timing.
30% more mileage and HP !!
keep the EPA happy, fuel economy, higher rpm's with no valve float, all that dam HP and torque when you need it
one of the big oil co's will find out about it, buy the patent/licensing, and snub it out real quick.
i been earning a living re building automatic trans for the past 37 yrs.
hated the solenoids in the begining but have come to realize the advantages of the precise control.

after some thought there needs to be some type of mechanical failsafe.
maybe a spring to retract the valve if there is an electrical problem.
blown fuse/bad ground/computer glitch etc.
could have a pile of junk real quick if any are left open at the wrong time....

I drove a 6 cylinder diesel up to 170,000 miles without ever touching the valves or timing chain or tensioners or camshafts. I just dont see solenoids giving the same reliability. But it is possible to make it failsafe, Peugeot HDI engines break rocker arms rather tn bending valves. However the absence of camshafts, timing chains and tensioners would make cylinder head removal as simple as if it were a two stroke. A simple diy job.
