Hi all, thinking of using a K engine for another purpose, not familiar with these engines and wondered if you could tell what the circular section on the left of the bellhousing does (when looking at the clutch bell housing with the gearbox detached, from the back of the bike) On K100 and K1100 engines there is a circular part cast into the casing, with two smaller circles inside it, what does that do?

It doesn't seem to be there on k1200's?! The whole 'ear' section of the casing is different on k1200's.

Lastly, are the bellhousing's interchangeable across the models? Ignoring the gearbox, at this stage, bellhousing to engine block wise?

Thanks all.

My friend here said a brick K1200 six speed transmission and flnal drive would fit a K100. But the transmission frame mounting differs so a frame modification is required. He is ex BMW. But if you are using it for a different purpose then you may be ok.

The intermediate housings are interchangeably, I know of several K1200 engines in earlier bricks.

The same thing the other way round. Engine swap is easier because mountings are the same.

Thanks all.
To me ( & I go back to my first K100 in 1986) it looks like BMW where going to fit a car type starter motor in there but changed there mind in production.

I have heard but I really don't know if it is right that Skoda used the K 100 engines in a car at some time. It certainly looks like where a starter motor would go but on the outside there is no room for the actual motor as the space that it would take is already full of engine.
I have never heard an explanation for that marking but there surely was a plan there when it was done.
