So after reading the thread on alloy cleaning it seems I should have painted fork lowers. The frame has been straightened in the dim dark past, so who knows about the forks. I've never been able to keep a good alloy finish on them and painting might be the solution.

To the Aussie brethren, what would be the best rattle can brand in terms of level of satin / semi gloss to use for a reasonably original look? Ideally something I can pick up from the high street auto stores.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

hi dee ..

cant say for sure whats the best

but can confirm the more coats down there the better .....those stones find the way to chip just about anything ...not counting all the flying bugs that seem to hit with amazing frequency and penetration

good luck mate

On the recommendation of someone else here I used Plasti-Kote on my bike.

Forks , rocker cover, crank cover, timing chain cover.

I used satin black for the engine and gloss/ enamel? for the forks.

Home hardware stores sell it for about $15 a can.

I'm well overdue for giving mine a tidy up ,
I have a habit of buying auto sprays from the local motor shops.
I can't say that these are any better than most other paints , but if you are shopping around , definitely do yourself a favour and stay clear of the cheap brands. they are usually filled with too much thinner and the finish is compromised by this.
anything under $10 a spray can should be avoided.
Rossko , any pics of the finished article?

Cool

Hi,
I did mine many moons ago with Black gloss plasticote and they are still good and have survived stone chip as its more durable that other types of enamels and also air salt living on the coast so for me it was a job well done
