Hey Fellas,

so i've repainted my engine. some parts in a lovely high temp gloss black and others in high temp silver, except that the silver is matt not gloss  Evil or Very Mad

the thought occurred to me to put a clear coat on top of the silver to A.) give it back a little 'razzle dazzle' and B.) make it easier to clean.

so my question, is there such a thing as high temp clear coat? and is so, what brand do we think is the least crap?

cheers for the input as ever

I don't know of a high-temperature clear coat.   I painted my engine block silver using high temp engine enamel in a spray bomb, and used no clear coat.  I read that a clear coat will eventually yellow due to the very high temperatures (this claim comes from owners of bikes with air-cooled engines).  I also had my valve, crankcase, water pump and timing chain covers done in spray chrome with 2K clear over that coating.  The reasoning was that the water / air cooling and rubber gasket thermal barriers would reduce the temperatures on these parts enough that the clear could endure.  It's not been long enough to make a claim one way or the other that this works.  I do now regret using the spray-on chrome in this application and wouldn't recommend it.

My guess is that if you do clear coat your engine, you'll come to regret it later when the paint yellows or flakes.

Personally, I don't think a K gets hot enough to need a 'high temp' paint. The sump cover on my solo has been painted with Halford's metallic blue rattle can paint and finished with Halford's clear coat without any problems.

The outfit has gloss black Plastikote on the sump and cam box covers, also without problems.

This sump cover was painted in 2007.

Cheers for the update chaps. I did a little snuffling around eBay and came up with some VHT stuff, will see how it goes. If it gets leprosy and flakes away i'll just redo it at a later date

I polished and painted mine, very successful, now nearly 10000ks down the track and no chipping, flaking or discoulration. I got the cases polished by the shop and got hold of this new paint called Diamonshine on the market from Kbs coatings:
