I need to remove the lower fairing on my RT but I can't get this top crash bar mounting undone. I'm sure it's gotta be simple but I don't want to force anything and I've not done this before.

Underneath the plastic cap on the outside of the crashbar is a nut that you need to remove.

The cheapest thing on a BMW is the nut that connects the handlebars to the seat.

It's a 13mm nut and you need a tube spanner or a 6" extension for a 3/8 drive ratchet. the pull the plastic cap as K1oolt said and you're in.
