Hi group!  Hope everyone is well.

Well a year later now, hmm hmm, I finally got to the rear main seal and as I was initially trying to get the seal out  a flexible type of washer? came loose from behind the rear main seal, (the original seal from what I can gather from other posts) . This part is more like a bracelet , flexible  and braided. I can't find the part in any of the diagrams and not sure where to put it , assuming it can be reused.    I will post photos as soon as I can. Does anybody know what this without a photo

It fits loosely on the front of the shaft, but it seems like it should have come from behind the big cir clip and closer to the bearings. If it does go behind the cir clip, why would it have come forward and over it and can I put it back over the cir clip with peace of mind it will stay put?

During this project , back a few steps, when I took off the two frame to transmission bolts, in order to remove the gearbox, there was one washer on the inside of the frame between the swing arm but not one on the other side, is this normal? Sorry I prob should have scoured the parts diagram before asking this one.

It's easy to forget, but there are a variety of Mighty Ks about, and it always helps tremendously if we know what year/model we're talking about. Some folks put the VIN up as their signature.

Could it be you're talking about the circular-shaped thrust washer, also known in BMW parlance as a stop disc? It sits just behind the stub of the flywheel. There's a 1.0mm and a 1.25mm thickness version.

Otherwise, are you looking at the reinforcement spring which sits inside of the rear main seal, or many seals, for that matter?

I think you are referring to the reinforcement spring which is part of the seal. Is it about 1.5mm in diameter and made into a circle of about 52mm and a bit stretchy.
This shows the spring and where it goes

Thanks guys, btw that was fast. . .Sorry I was referring to a 1986 K100RS. And yes it appears that it is the spring on the seal as your picture shows, thanks.  I'll take a look again tomorrow to verify .   Btw, what is the trick to keeping the new seal proud .5mm instead of completely seated?  Couldn't they just make them that size to begin with and instruct to fully seat them ?

From what I can gather the seal is to be left proud so that a new surface is used and the lip wont be running in the old track.  Run a finger nail across the track left by the old seal and if after you clean the surface with a nylon pot scrubber you still pick up a track then you need to leave the seal proud and if no mark then put the seal in level.
I had to make a tool to put the seals in with the 0.5mm proud as I couldn't find one, I dare say BMW do have a tool for the job. I recall one guy here a few years ago made a tool from a piece of wood with a lip so that the seal could only be pushed in so far.

Take two of your thickest pubic hairs and with the aid of a petroleum based jelly adhere them, one on each side, to the outside of where the seal is to go.

Then just bash away to your hearts content.

0.5mm clearance.

That's what I did, but I used RT's pubes. The grey ones seem thicker for some reason

You're welcome

you could always linish the shaft face  so you are bedding that seal into newish metal ...then it doesn't matter, and you wont have the sharp edge to deal with .

Springy, bedding, shaft, pubic, petroleum jelly, lips, stretchy circle, fingernails and tracks. This is going somewhere, but I'm not sure I'm proud of the path...
