Hello from Greece.
Because Greece has a lot of ancient ruins, statues ect. i found very convenient to collect ancient but high grade reliable motorcycles as those of K series.
I am 62 year old and i am driving motorcycles fron 1977.My first was a Piaggio Vespa 50s, after a HONDA CB200, a SR500, a XJ600, and then, on 1992 came the K100 naked brick! It was second hand imported from Japan and totaly renewed from the seller. It has 21.000 km. and it was in excelent condition.I am still have it in excellent condition with 176.000 km. and now my sonn is driving it and he is very happy with her. On 2005 i buyed a R1150R thinking that it will be something as the K100.
On 2009 i decided to make a trip with my wife around west Balkans.Living fron Athens, the R1150R, make only 80 km and stopped because of a broken cylinder valve! The same day, i returned to Athens with the road help vehicle, i left the R1150R on the official BMW service and carrying our luggages and dressed with the trip equipment, we went to our garage and we took the K100 wich has no good brake puds, i left it without changing oil mor than 2 years (because i dont use it) and has a front tir in terrible condition.
The same day, we traveled 450km. and the next day we went to Italy , where i change the oil by self in a gas station.I changed brake puds in Croatia in Split and tire when i returned to Greece after 12 days because i dint find tire in stock in Balkans. I did 4.500 km. with the K100 full loaded, without service and this monster of reliabillity did the trip working perfectly i high and also low speeds and in any situation, wether and road.
After that, i selled the R1150R and i buyed a 2006 K1200GT thinking that thin K engine must have something of the relliability of the K series. Wrong! After some trips in Europe and Turkey, and some very expensive damages, when in April did the 100.000 km. service i payed a lot of money and i spent a lot of time in the official BMW service. I July i changed the differential with a cost of 1500 euro!
After that i buyed a secont K100LT model 1987 with 94.000 km , i renewed with very little money , and i used avery day without a problem! My son is still using the old K with the 170.000 km. with no problem at all!
The K1200Gt i still today in the service for changing some bearings of the paralever system!
I am now with you because i am in endless love with my 2 K's , i love to hear theyre engine working after so many kilometers smooth and perfectly, i love to change the gears smooth and quite(!), i love that i can repair by my self almost everything , i love to prepair a long trip taking with me a spare line for the clutch and a spurk plug , knowing that i will not have problems 98%!
