Now, Correct me if I am wrong

Is the best ( or prefferred) way to get the lid open by drilling out the Key way ??

Thanks guys

Left my keys in a hire car last year in Brissy and never got them back. This year I knew I needed a petrol cap lock cylinder with key so brought a new set home with me for the RS. I slipped a piece of fuel hose over the drill bit so as not to go too far in and carefully drilled the centre of the lock cylinder out. Once I'd reached the required depth I rammed a large screwdriver into the cavity and turned it to open. And open she did. Then I picked out the bits and replaced the lock cylinder. Good to go.

I don't know of any other way. Attempting to tap out the eeny tiny weeny roll pin sideways is too bloody fiddly and prying up on the cap will only damage the finish.

Thanks for that. I appreciate your response

I did try it but to no avail.

I ended up mutilating the top by first doing as you suggested but ended up drilling out over the hinge pins. I would have to have had a new top piece anyway as when I inspected the broken piece it was the part of the top that actuates the lock (abs part). Never mind. It's over now. I is off to the wreckers tomorrow probably, after pricing up a gen. part

A little bit annoyed. Would have to happen on a Sunday Morning, on a lovely day, when we had the time and money to go and really enjoy ourselves. Our destination is a fantastic little hot pools, little known, little used and and very very nice, only 125ks from where we live.

Methinks somehow that there is a great big motorcyclist guardian angel in the sky that didn't want me on the road today, lest I get taken out by a crazy. Not to worry. Stay home today to live to ride another day

Hi Be made,

I came up with this idea some time ago in answer to a question from Saxon7. By drilling a small hole, say 3mm, as in the picture, you should be able to release the catch with a small screwdriver.

I don't know if anyone has tried it yet, but I think it would work!

Paul.

Thanks for this. I wish I had found out prior to buggerising the cap completely. Will save the info for next time :-)))

Ok . . so . . after shopping around the entire world to try and get my hands on a cap in less than a month I resorted to machining a base for the flange so that it would take a Car petrol cap. It'll do for now. The New price was $550.00

This cost (cough) $275.00. I have no lathe these days or it would have been free. So I had to hire someone to do it for me. Damn. Never mind . We are back on the road and that is really all that counts

I know it won't be any good in the rain but it's only a temp measure until the $100 nzd one's arrives from either US and the UK. I have purchsed both of the only ones I could find in the world

I NEVER want this sort of frustration again

Be made,
Just out of interest, could you drill a hole in the mangled cap as per my picture, to see if there would be any flaws in my idea?

If my solution works, it may not be a bad idea to drill the hole in your new cap and fit a rubber bung to seal the hole.
Sod's law would then say that the problem would never reoccur. cheers

Paul.

Watch Motobins and Motorworks for deals. I managed a complete, silver painted petrol cap assembly (without lock cylinder) for less than AU$100 delivered to OZ. I painted it black, slipped my lock into it and 'called it good', as they say in Yankee land. $550? Really? Astounding.

Well done. Yeah. I too was a little taken aback at the new price but then I have come to expect it from BMW. Someone once came up with the acronom "Bloody Money waster". I know they are right but I still love my BM. Probably just as much of a money waster as a hardly but I think in the long term us beema luva's still come out on top in the handling, reliability and practicality stakes

To my mind that would be a good move

Yep will do man. In the next few weeks. I am a little tied up until about beginning December but after that . . for sure

Hi Paul. I would but the old stuff went out in the bin this morning.

Sorry.

But I cannot see any reason why it would not work

Think I might try that since I have a spare to try it on. ....Same as the hole beside the shift lever of an auto transmission in case it gets stuck....! I know you may not be too familiar with that one Paul......
