Hi guys, I’m looking at buying a new battery. Normally this would not be a difficult task, simply replace what’s there ( SSB PowerSport,  C60-N30AL-B, CCA:360, AMP/Hr: 30 ) with something simular if not the same.

However, I’m kind of in the middle of customising the bike and like to relocate the battery. With this in mind I need something small & light with enough grunt.

Has anyone had any experience with using lithium batteries?  I’m looking at a SSB PowerSport  LH9-B http://www.ssbpowersport.com.au/Products/ProductList/tabid/241/mode/details/pid/598/Default.aspx
I have looked at the threads already there but I’m still a bit uncertain as I don’t have any details on the recharge requirements for the abovementioned battery.

Ill be putting mine under the tail.
Shorai LFX18L1-BS12 12V

That's the most likely one for me.
Only 18 amp hours but the bike wont be loaded with accessories.

seems a good choice mossy

9 ah might be a bit light when sitting in city traffic with the fan running as well as all the other things  (fuel pump, ignition and lighting )

That's pretty much what i'm looking for, would the 33 amp alternator be enough to charge it? my bike will have virtually 0 accessories. Only the bear essentials.

...and charlie so the '9' in 'LH9-B' would be the Ah? The product description doesn't mention it and 'electrics' aren't my strong suit. Laughing

Yes will be 9

The battery I have chosen is 18 amp hour 270cranking so Idd say its as small as you would like to go.

It can be installed on any angle also.

-12v 270cca 18ah
-Super light 1kg
-Extra Small Frame 66mm W, 148mm L, 105mm H
-Holds charge for 1 year without maintenance
-Carbon composite case
-Faster cranking for better starts
-No explosive gasses, lead or acid
-Can be mounted in any position
-Made in Japan

I guess the 9 has some significance oliver

im guessing 10 + amps at a standstill with the fan running ...and the alternator not putting much back in the system at the 900 idle revs ...not till about 1500 do you get a good charge .

the standard alternator should do the job well for the normal operations given it wont have all the accessories onboard , just might pay to do a voltage measurement at various loads and revs to make sure ....may need a new voltage regulator if the brushes are worn ....but we haven't heard the killometers travelled and vintage etc yet

just what I think makes sense so far

Thanks gent’s,

Mossy the size is perfect and I found a Shorai dealer not far from me. The ‘angle’ installation is a’ must’ for me as I want to make the thing disappear.

A new voltage regulator is on its way, ordered it yesterday. You should have seen what the previous owner did to overcome the obviously worn out original regulator. I’ll try to show you a pic…

BTW, the ‘K’ is a 1988 RT with just over 100K. I forgot to mention that earlier.

Thanks again, now I just have to rob the nearest 7-11 to pay for it.

...Ok, here are the Alternator pic's as mentioned. They kinda speak for themselves and you have to see the humor in it.

Which battery to buy? Alt

...in case you're wondering the black and red wires are running to a regulator (pic 2) that was welded with a braked to the frame. Not to mention that one of the brushes had no contact at all (being 1/2 the length of the other). I'm still not 100% sure why he cut the original connection and 'jumped' it to one of the regulator connections. Like i said, i'm not all that flash with electrics, but this makes even me go WTF?

Enjoy,

Nothing says poor workmanship more than wrinkles in your insulation tape.
