Hi, I have been running good but I have had a smoke problem almost every time I start, I looked at the 0il level and it was to the top of the glass, so we took about 1/2 a quart out, I hope this helps. the bike is 86 with 85 motor. does any one think that a little to much oil in the crank case could make a smoking problem?

Thanks
Brian

Don't worry about it. A few seconds of blue smoke is common.

A few thing I find help:
a. Don't overfill,
b. Don't let the hot engine idle while on the side stand
c. use centre stand whenever possible.

There is a BMW document somewhere that deals with the reasons. Number one is the engine design... it is mounted flat and HOT thin OIL works it way past the rings. That burns off on start up and is of no consequence.

The rings on the first K100 engines are not pined to the pistons.
Sometimes, the gaps on the 3 rings will be in line allowing the oil to seep through.

This problem was resolved on the 1988 engine

The 1985 and 1988 engine don't use the same rings.

Thanks, a few day of bad weather and Ill give her a try with the lowered oil level. The motor is not original with the bike. but starts right up and runs nice with the exception of the smoke, but it was full to the top of the sight glass.

Thanks
Brian

If you look at the recent discussions you will find that people have, experimentally, determined that 3L of oil is enough to get it to the middle of the sight glass with a possible top up of 0.2L to 0.3L after the usual run and check.
