Calling for expression of interest of K owners with bikes built between 1983 and 1985 to form an historical social bike club in the state of New South Wales, Australia. This way we can possibly register our bikes at a much lower price and have many of our rides sanctioned. I raised this issue some time ago, but now there may be more people interested. In our state the bike must be 30 or more years old as opposed to other states where it is 25.

Not much good to you but in Ireland at 30 years old cars bikes etc are classed as Veteran and Vintage and we get cheaper road fund and cheaper insurance. However the cheaper insurance seems restricted to limited miles and attending organised events. I use the bike all the time so I only get the cheap road fund fee.

Do you have room for what we refer to as overseas members?

Information already on hand fr Registrar of Incorp societies regarding registration. Nec for club to be incorp to be recognised by RTA for classic registration purposes.

Public Liability insurance will be the issue and its cost.

The point - Will enable Ks to be ridden on rides arranged through this forum, because to date, any proposed ride must be listed by the club (inc) to which the rider belongs.
My club (CVEMCC) will not recognise K riders unless on their club rides

Probably best that thread contributions are constructive and not fr naysayers.

We pay normal costs where registration or road tax is determined by the weight of the machine...the heavier...the more wear you cause on the road system. We all know the Ks really fly, therefore should pay very little.

Incidentally cost of 'historic registration 'in NSW is $59 p.a. ($99 first time with plate issued.) A lot cheaper than Qld.

As of this year, I can get my 85RT club registered with my local club, but probably wouldn't at this stage as I like the flexibility of riding when I want to.

I'd definitely be interested in participating in a club that can be registered with RMS for historic registration, as I do more rides related to this forum than any other organised rides.

Does anyone know how flexible the process is for having a ride sanctioned without getting RMS offside?

Whether or not I'd get historic registration I don't know, but membership would happen, if only to help make historic registration available for those who want it.

Bill

THIS from an earlier attempt to do the same.

Not for me. To save $100 a year on rego is not worth the inconvenience.

Pretty sure the link to the original post (also started by Ainsjac) is pretty constructive regardless of my personal opinion.

The issue does not revolve around the RMS (old RTA). In the end it is a police matter.
The rule seems to be that you can only ride a club plated bike on rides that are sanctioned by the club you belong to. This is either by way of the club newsletter or by way of a reciprocal agreement with another club.
In the case of the CVEMC, the president of the club has stated that if you are pulled up riding your 'historic plated 'bike, if the club is aware of your being on an ápproved' ride, and if the cop gets antsy and books you for no registration, the club will intervene and suppport you in your appeal to the RMS. However, there will be no RETROSPECTIVE APPROVAL deals done. If the clubs abuse this arrangement then they will have only them selves to blame and it is a pretty good deal that we have in NSW. Much better than Qld.

The better scheme is the Victorian one where you purchase a log book and decide what days you want to elect to ride. A nationally uniform standard approach would be great, esp if based on the Victorian model.
I spoke to one of the officers at the Grafton RTA where the 'historic plated vehicles' admin is based and he alleged that the Vic scheme was being abused and that NSW wouldn't adopt it for that reason. More likely that this is the usual state rivalry and every one needing to reinvent the wheel.

To re iterate, I have a K that I can only ride on club runs (only once a month) and this is not enough. A K club would have the advantage of being the arranger of K bike runs
and even if the numbers on a particular ride were small, they would still be official.

I know I would not be going through such hoops for the historic vehicles.

At the moment we have a situation where you can insure multiple bikes on one policy, the premium being decided by the most powerful one and then a small flat fee for each additional one. This is done by the insurers. Alternatively you can have a collective policy and share an agreed mileage between all your classic vehicles. The local authorities at the moment only regard it a as classification and it does not need to be policed. I think the best of both worlds is we can use our K every day, work etc too and its legal as long as you have the correct insurance.

Very commendable that insurance companies in your part of the world are prepared to cover several bikes at not not a lot more than the premium for one but historic vehicle registration isn't connected to a an insurance issue an any way. Well, only in as much as the registration fee covers 3rd party personal injury in Qld and in NSW you have to go and get a green slip (3rd part personal only)

For my Titan on club rego, the admin fee is $21 and the CTP premium $36. total $57.
Some posters are saying that they don't care about the cost difference between this and normal registration.
Fine, if you have only one bike but if you have seven, the difference is thousands of dollars.

Quote" To save $100 a year on rego is not worth the inconvenience"

Just bs. So you can register (and get CTP ) a K in NSW for $157 a year? don't think so.

Rick, I believe there are differences for the compulsory green slips, depending whether you are in the country or city. My bike is a country one....green slip..$311,rego....$212. My understanding is that the historic plate scheme fee covers both fees.

My renewal for the red rocket was $440 and $72 for the concessional on red plates so there is very little difference

It's not a bad idea to revisit this idea Stan. I really like having full rego so I can ride the bike any time I want, but understand the need for concessional rego as our stable grows ( or as K pox tightens it's grip )
My rego costs are, green slip QBE  $388 and rego $120

Setting up an incorporated club, getting the liability insurance and sorting the arrangements with the RMS is a lot of work.  Probably better to join an existing organisation.

I can tell you about BMWTCNSW and what we do just for your consideration.

  1. Its an established incorporated club that already exists and will celebrate 50 years of existance this year.
  2. There is an established historic plate scheme.
  3. The historic registrar is a K rider (has about 3 in various states of repairplus the usual shed full of bits)
  4. Yes you can only use your historic plated bike on club events (plus local tuning/maintenance rides etc but must notify the registrar before if you are moving your plated bike)
  5. The ride co-ordinator is very accommodating by including any rides in the calendar when requested by member who wishs to take their historic plated bike to a specific event (The co-ordinator needs 2 months notification due to the need to publish in the newsletter.  I know this because the ride co-ordinator is moi.
  6. The club  would be amenable to setting up a Klassik-K Register within the club, but it would still have to be part of the club.

So, if you're interested at all 1- Join, 2-contact the registrar regarding getting the historic rego, 3 contact the VP if/when you wish to get a ride/event listed on the calendar.

Or don't, your call. Fire any questions my way if you're interested.

Al

Smithy, I am with qbe as well. Do you know that if you can prove that you have a clean licence history you get a reduced price.
Al, thanks for your info, really appreciate it. I look at the issue from the situation of having 2 k bikes fully registered. If one could be a club bike and have occassional runs and the other more as a daily bike. As I grow older in my retirement and my body reminds me of this, the number of riding days get less. Just want to have as many of our bikes on the road as possible so that enjoyment of riding can continue.

Yes Stan, I got stung at 6km over the limit nearly 2 years ago ( first speed ticket in over 15 years ) and have been paying for it ever since. The insurance companies make more money out of it than the Police ever do.

Hi there ainsjac
you can count me in as the scooter will only ever be used for rallies which can all be club sanctioned events. I was going to register the old girl with the local club but this is more cosy I think

Smithy, I know this cant help you now but, in nsw if you have a good record and you do get caught for a low over the limit speeding incident then you can send off a letter, or ring the number on the ticket and talk to a real person. In most cases a caution will be issued..........you have been a naughty boy, dont do it again.
