Hello,
I am planning to replace fork seals and stanchion's as soon as I have time.

I came across this non specific clip on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrmYJgcGX30

Should I expect it to run as smoothly or ?

Rod

I've recently refurbed a set of forks for my solo and it was all straightforward. Probably the most likely problem will be if either of the damper holding bolts are seized in the bottom of the fork legs.

I did buy a small sachet of fork seal lubricant from Motobins and for £1.20, it didn't break the bank. As my fork legs were going to be sitting around for a few months before I get a 'round tuit', it seemed a good idea to prevent the seals drying out.

Paul.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for that.
Yes I hope same said bolts don't give me any trouble either.
Probably wont though as so far I've not run into any problems once I've started a job.
Have to replace the cooling fan too, but apart from time I don't imagine it will be a problem as I'm ok with electrics.
after that it's going to be handbrake seal and I'm good to go.

Well to be honest I'll ride her anyway as she's very forgiving it seems.

adios
Rod

The K1100's have a cartridge fork, which is a bit different:

I think that you can expect those bolts to be very tight, even if they are not seized.  I could not even begin to get mine to move with an Allen key.  I ended up buying a 1/2 inch drive socket with the correct size Allen key and then using a long breaker bar.  The fork legs were held in a stout bench vise after wrapping them in a pair of leather work gloves to prevent damage, and I had to use a lot of effort to shift them.  Don't use too much force on an ordinary Allen key, as you can easily slip and round out the bolt - get the correct tools for the job, as it is much cheaper than trying to extract a rounded bolt. Good luck.

I did mine last year and it was the same as doing them on a k100 - that is if you are only separating the forks to replace the seals.  The allen bolts weren't seized and luckily opened with no issue.

Also, be careful with the lip of the new seal, gently does it as it's easy to mis-seat the seal.  Use a large socket or ring spanner as a drift to sit them in. I had to destroy the old seals to get them out.

Also, when you have the forks off, it is a good idea to put on a set of fork gaiters - will really extend the life of the new seals.

Thanks for all the comments.
and Corkboy for prompting my memory
that I also have a new set of stanchion's to put on
and a set of gaitors

So that might change the gameplan a bit timewise.

Also I will see about getting the proper tool to remove those bolts
as I don't want to run into ringing the damn things off....;-(

more anon

Thanks Simon,
I'll see how I get on with the other bits and pieces and I'll have a better idea of what I'll be needing
