Hi, I have recently bought a 1989 K100RS SE, which I am getting ready to do some business miles getting around the country for my work rather than using the car and spending a lot of time sitting in motorway queues!

I first owned a BMW R100S way back in the 80's but that went to make way for children and mortgage repayments.  More recently I have enjoyed getting back into motorcycling with a pair of Honda CX500, which I still have and have no intention of selling if I can help it.  The Brick has come on board as I have always liked them and want something a bit more powerful for the longer runs. 

The Brick is currently sitting on wooden supports ready for a full spline lube.  I will be posting in the Tech section shortly, because with all the Mark 1 ABS fixtures I want to know if I can unbolt the gearbox and slide back the complete transmission unit on the BMW slider pins just enough to do the clutch splines but without having to remove the swing arm, exhaust and footrest hangers. Let me know if you can offer any advice.

Those SE versions really were the prettiest incarnation of the K, IMHO, and I'm sure we're all looking forward to some pictures.

Some lovely roads around Northampton for sure. And I don't mean the A43 either. I suppose it must be from having Weetabix the Builder there.

Kind of think with the urban traffic there you are after making a very wise move.

Welcome!  She is truly a sweet looking brick!

About the spline lube.  There is no way you are going to get to the clutch splines without removing all that hamper behind the transmission.  That includes swingarm, footpeg plates, shock, Pannier mounts, fender, battery, and yes, the ABS motors.  There's probably more, but it's late and my memory isn't that good.

I always take the attitude that if the gearbox splines need doing then so do all the other parts will also need cleaning and new grease. Be  careful removing the left swingarm pivot bolt, you need to clean the threaded part that protrudes through to the inside so I clean that bit with an old tooth to prevent dirt being dragged back into the thread.

A bit of dim lighting and soft focus and this old SE does look mint!

A couple of weeks ago at a BMW Club meet there was a comment "look at that patina". Nice word 'patina' or the little wrinkles, lines and scars that carry the story of the bike's life.

If you go to the trouble of pulling the gear box, you may want to do all the maintenance associated with this area of the bike.
The "big" splines have to be greased to and this involve removing the swing arm.
If your gear box indicator is working well, it would be a good time to clean the TGPI switch on the gear box and coat it with silicone.
When the bike is on blocks, clean the bearings for the side stand and the one on the clutch lever.

Why not doing a proper maintenance? It doesn't cost any money and can avoid further problems.
