Gday All,

I've found the culprit, but where am I going to find a replacement?

They are available Paul have a search here and the www for speedo gears. They often are only available in sets but it probably not a bad idea to replace all as they are the same age as the busted gear. This is one place in Oz but there are others http://www.repairsonly.com.au/index.html

Thanks Rick... I've sent him an enquiry..... The broken gear appears to be made of rubber, when all the others appear plastic.

This guy has sets of gears or you can buy them individually.

I've not bought anything from him.
Good luck

The broken gear can be replaced with a gear from Jaycar...total cost about $8. You also get some other gears in the pack. The other gears you have to get from other sources and they are about $25 each plus $9 to send to you. The gears start out as hard "plastic" feeling cogs and with time and heat become almost candle wax. Bend your rubber gear and it will break. That main small gear is on a bush and the replacement has no bush, and the Jaycar replacement also needs to to trimmed as it is too wide. Check the holes on either end of the gear...one is narrower than the other....push the bush on starting with the wider side. The old bush can be taken off with side cutters, but don't cut across the bush, rather along the length...squeeze the cutters and the bush will come off.
Good luck.

I searched this recently and there was a post saying The BM Shop would do the job for $200, so they should have the bits. I am looking at this repair myself (When winter comes around) I am going to try Otto instruments as well.

That was me and my speedo.

He won't sell the bits! No way, no how.

Otto is the guy to go to, I believe.

Otto's got all of the gear choices, but I had to go there with my old cogs and select the colours/sizes I needed. As they're in the business of repairing instruments they appeared slightly reluctant to sell me only individual pieces, stating to me something like "Mate, there's a whole lot of other bits in there that need replacing as well" but as I had the cogs I needed in hand, and a pretty woman with me, they relented.

This seems to be a problem in hot climates........we don't get many broken gears here. Odometer broken 178468

I once had some nylon cable ties that had become brittle; each time I tried to pull them tight, they broke. An industrial chemist friend said that nylon has a water content and it can dry out. He suggested soaking the ties in water for a couple of days and hey ho, they're still supple after a couple of years.

Now I'm not suggesting that you soak your speedo in a bucket of water....... Odometer broken 8157

I have been informed that the lubricant that was applied to the cogs at the factory was great for cooler conditions, however given heat and time the lubricant became acidic and helped break down the plastic. The bloke who supplied my gears said that Mercs and BMW cars the era of our bikes have similar problems, except to get the speedos out of cars is far more complicated....and expensive.

Paul.

very true paul

we had to maintain  some electronic perimeter systems involving cable ties every 8 inches (200mm) along a fence in the sun et all   after a dry spell was the best time to remove them for replacement ....they would just sheer off without much energy ....after a rain event they were quite obstinate to cut even .

My Dad always said "what goes around, comes around" and I'm a big believer of that.

If I have a spare and I'm not using it, I'll pass it on.
