Hi all. I am new here and have searched online and in the forum for the info required without much luck. It may be a simple swap but wanted to check if anyone had any info / tips before doing this.

I have an 85 K100RS which the previous owner has put RT bars on. He didn't do it, he had a shop do it for him so didn't know anything about what was changed. What I have are a set of RS bars from a bike of the same year, the tools required to do a straight swap.

Obviously longer cables were fitted to accommodate the RT bars, so my main question is: will slightly longer cables be a problem? Will they bunch, get caught on other things or difference in length not an issue?

Any opinions appreciated and thanks again to the great welcome I received in the new members section.

not sure Ulls,
whilst you are in the process , have a chat to Larrikan , as he was endeavouring to find the gear to convert his RS to RT height. not sure if he still has intentions.

Well on that subject, if anyone in SEQ / Nth NSW wants to do the RT bars I'd be happy for them to take mine for a ride before I do the swap. Always looking for an excuse to go for a ride.

I'm looking at changing my RT bars to RS or mabe even flat bars and also removing my ageing fairing. From what I've been reading here and worked out its relatively simple.

Clutch/throttle/fast idle cables you'll need to change. You'll run into problems with excess cable causing added friction and stress. Clutch and throttle are about $50 - $60 each new.
.
Wiring should be simple enough. Just pull it into the under tank area and cable tie it somewhere safe. If you're handy with crimping new connectors then you could tidy it up but do that at the connectors under the tank.

Brake line needs to be shortened, find second hand RS one or get a new one made.

There is plenty to read about this on the forum, you just need to use the 'Forum Google Search' on the Portal or Forum tabs.
I just put in "changing handlebars" and came up with a host of posts.

Pity we're both changing down, we could've swapped.

Cheers

Hi Ulls,

Willing to give you a hand with the bar cx.  I have all the necessary tools here and can help out with any hardware that may be required.

If I am not mistaken, the 75S and RS bars are the same, so you will have a chance to ride the sweetest K made prior to swapping bars.  Unfortunately, that will be the first bite of the dreaded K pox disease.  affraid

I won't be free next weekend but the one after is fine.  Easy to find off the motorway on the south side.

Cheers, Dave.

Wow! Thanks Dave that would be awesome. I have the RS bars but I guess I will need to get new clutch and throttle cables as well as brake hose?

I thought about keeping it the way it was for about ... 5 seconds. I think for the price of K bikes at the moment I could have an RT as well if I really wanted to do some touring. Very Happy But I'd have to hide it from my wife at my brothers house...

Thanks for the advice Kapt. H. I think you're right about the friction. Also the brake hose would just not work. I think it's about 10cm difference!

Am going to take Dave up on his kind offer as this will be my first foray into K maintenance etc...

I'm still trying to work her out... she has her Vespa, a modern 200cc very easy commuter. But I have a feing inside that maybe she looks at the new/old K100 with a little jealousy.

She's a rebel at heart and something tells me she would go nuts if she knew what it was like. Her 200 is very very zippy in traffic but there is a HUGE difference between it and the power of the K.

I'm still trying to work her out... K100RS with RT bars 44271  Don't waste your time man has been trying for thousands of years. Take it from someone who has been married near 40 years, don't bother just accept them.
Get her a K75 mine has had one for 8 years now after a succession of low cruiser types and if I tried to get it away from her it would probably be worth my life.
