Hi All,
Can anyone recommend how to tighten the "ball socket" inside the K1 mirror housing? I think it will require the removal of the glass and give access to the tension nut.
But I don't want to end up damaging the unit. Mine seems to have worked a bit loose over the past 25 years K1 Mirror Repair Icon_biggrin

Cheers

PS Apologies - I posted this in the wrong section.

Cant help with the repairs but if Motobins can put mirrors in with fairings then I guess it can be done here as well. Very Happy

I had the mirror off the K100 and also the car and I think the ball is the same detail. I didn't see a tension nut on mine

This is based on the K100.

Getting the glass off is a pop off move and may be easier done with the pod on the bike but watch when you are doing it so it doesn't pop off and land on the ground. On the K100 you can get something in behind the glass from the outside by leaning the glass the opposite way. Then do same from the other side. Put some protection between the glass edge and the pod to avoid scratching it The glass part is bonded to the back of the glass and I think is about 50mm wide so you should be able to exert pressure on  this part instead of the glass. With some degree of care the glass can be popped off. Do NOT lubricate the ball when you are putting it back on as the adjustment function relies entirely on friction between the ball and socket. I have a feeling that if you get another pod [from a K100] you can remove the ball part and fit it into the K1 pod as the ball part may not be part of the moulding and is most likely to be the same part number. I have done this on the car to avoid having to access wiring and respraying pods by getting a secondhand manual mirror on the basis that the plastic mouldings would be identical, which they were. Worst case scenario a replacement glass can be got.

Maybe a very thin layer over the ball might tighten it up for you.

This may not be acceptable to you but as short term is a short length of the foam pannier seal cut and pushed in between the glass and the pod to stop the glass moving, its still adjustable.

Easiest and safest method:
1. Take the mirror pod off the fairing
2. lay a towel on the floor, folded several times to form a cushion
3. With the mirror down, slam the pod onto the towel

Done.

another method of removing the mirror  is to use 2 cable ties

try about 300 mm long (1 foot )

tie the ends so it clips together as separate entities

slide the tied cable ties in from each end of the mirror
..get the ties close to the ball pivot point ...or as close as possible ...as the rs pods have a locating - positioning fork in the back base  to keep them from swivelling ...with a bit of a plastic guide along the back of the mirror glass subassembly

grasp the cable ties together in one hand in approximately the middle of the reflector glass ....supporting the pod with the other ...and with a quick sharp pull  you will hear - feel the separation occur as you tug

please do this over a bed ...carpet ...soft surface or similar as the release could let the mirror fall - escape from control

it works for me ...and is not hard to do .... I have had to do this on several occasions ...and so far .. a mirror has not suffered any damage ...on  rt - lt and rs versions

good luck at finding a "works for you solution "

wonder if I should post a video of the technique ..?

Some RS mirrors have a clip on the back of the mirror that needs to be removed before doing this (accessible with the indicator lens off) - Don't ask me how I know this Rolling Eyes

yes I noticed that ringfad ...good tip to look there first ...as rs mirrors were a conundrum to me at the first time .

I would probably agree with that except for one thing. Trappers K1 is out of the box perfect and I mean perfect. The only things worn are the tyres. If there is to a be a misfortune it should be to the glass and not the plastics....There would be a lot of gnashing of teeth if the plastics went wrong, a lot less if its just the glass.

The posts about the clip on the RS are good, I didn't find one on the LT or on the RT.

Well it is as it came out of the showroom and that takes a lot of work. I love to see it out and in fairness it comes out lots but always looks well. I couldn't see you risking the plastics. Hope it goes well.

Surely a K1 has mirrors on stalks and not in mirror pods?

The BMW 'stalk' mirrors that I remember had a flexible ring that located behind a rim on the housing. By pressing the mirror inward against the internal spring, the flexible ring could be prised out so, releasing the mirror.

Don't know if it applies to the K1 mirrors though.

BTW, I use Charlie's cable tie method for mirror pods, much better than 'slam-dunk'. K1 Mirror Repair 112350

This was my answer to a similar problem on my K1.

Mine were cracked not loose - the last two listed are suitable for K1's
