My 1991 K100 RS project bike needs a new gas cap, ignition switch and lock, and a call to BMW to make me a new set of keys (seller didnt have keys, but had papers)

I am wondering if I can buy a set of ignition switch, lock, and gas cap, and key off a older 1987 K100 bike, could i install those on my bike and would the ignition and key from the 87 bike match up on my 91 or would there be an issue with the computer from my bike not reading the foreign ignition?

Thanks,
Cam

You don't have to worry about chipped keys on these old yokes. The only thing that might be different from an 87 eight valve (if yours is a 16 valve) might be the ignition switch, but i'm sure somebody out there will know that.

The lock cylinder is completely different on a 16V K100 compared to 8V models. The ignition switch's electrical portion and the key are the same, however. The 16V version fits into a shaft built onto the upper triple clamp, and is much longer, as opposed to fitting into the dashpad on the 8V models. If you modify the older model's dashpad by cutting it to accept the cast tube the newer ignition fits into, or grind the tube off. It could be done, but....

There is nothing at all unusual about the keys and locks. Any good locksmith will be able to make a key.
If the seat is unlocked you can get the whole lock off the frame and take that in to get keys made.
There is also a thread on here about where to drill a small hole in the fuel cap so as to be able to get it open without a key. You would be able to get the cap off by removing the 4 phillips head screws and get a key cut from that as well. However the ignition switch is a very different thing to get off without a key.

Thank you guys for all the help. I really appreciate all the information. Im going from from a 71 honda that i can fix most things with a hammer or a screwdriver, to this german powerhouse that I hope to tear apart and build from the ground up and keep for my entire life with hopefully a few hundred thousand miles. Its currently sitting at 40,000 km's.

I don't have a seat, so can't get a a key made from that. The tank is already drilled (drilled through the key hole by previous owner...) so I can't get a key from that either. The bike does have the ignition housing shaft that's built onto the upper triple clamp, that I just assumed was a wheel lock because of its shape and placement? But this young green horn is learning new stuff everyday, thanks to you guys.

I heard there is an option to contact your local BMW dealership with your vin and registration and they will make you a key in the $75 range. I see two options: I could go the BMW dealership way, or disconnect the ignition and take that into a locksmith for new keys. And then when I find a gas cap, get that keyed alike?

Thanks for the help,

The seat lock is on the frame of the bike and it would be unusual for it to be removed. Good luck.

You can buy blank keys from motoworks pretty cheap and they have new seat and fuel cap locks with folding key as well for about £12. They only have secondhand ignition locks tho. Don't know if they're the 16v ones.
You might have to replace the whole switch panel with one from a wreck.
Been looking into this because I have a different key for each. Lots of info here about modifying locks. Use the search on the Forum or Portal tab.
