 Welcome and nice bike. I have a late RS SE too! They are quite a big beast to return to biking on, I can also appreciate that, but the power delivery is very friendly when you inevitably find yourself in the wrong gear! It is the low speed handling and tight twisties that are most challenging I find. I am starting to experiment with different tyre pressures from the BMW recommendation to try and find a sweet spot for me. 
Just a suggestion, I participate in a RoSPA advanced motorcycling course run by a local bike club and it has brought my riding skills and confidence up significantly. Well recommended!

Welcome Carl from another denizen of Somerset (Shepton Mallet)

I returned to biking with a K100LT a couple of years back and remember that knee knocking feeling well. It is a heavy bike and it does take a few miles to get used to the handling. I now comfortably go round bends in 5th that, when I started I was dropping down to 3rd for....and it actually feels more comfortable because you're leaning the bike and letting the tyres do the work rather than trying to steer.

Just be careful of the top weight at very slow speeds or stationary - if you let it catch you out and you let the bike lean over too far, it is very hard to catch her before she drops (and I see from your other post, that you've already had an unfortunate drop!). DOn't worry, we've all been there or had a few near misses.

Maintenance is reasonably straight forward and gets you intimate with your K - check out the so you've bought a K pages on the portal and check the age of your tyres (many posts on this subject, but >4 years old = change them regardless of remaining tread). The K is very sensitive to tyres.

Welcome Carl.  Take it easy until you get comfortable with the bike, for you are certainly correct in noting the .. ahem... substantial... nature of these bikes.  For my part, I've decided that if I'm going to be successful in continuing on with my K100RS as I rush into geezerhood, I cannot neglect exercise to maintain my leg strength.  Low speed manners of a heavy machine demands a degree of fitness if the rider is to maintain control.

After 5 years with a Super Tenere 1200 I really don't find any K100 heavy or hard to handle at all.
