My 5yr task is to build a k100 Morris Minor 1000 😁
I recently swapped my ZZR600 for a 1985 K100 and just bought a 1970 Morris Minor. My end goal is to low rider the Morris (lowered, roofchop, fender skirts etc etc) and have the K100 as its heart. I also want to keep the k100 gear box and all the electrics so gear wise will be 1down 4up and extend the wiring loom for lights gauges etc instead of cutting and splicing 2 different looms together.

I know it's going to be a long slow process to say the least lol

List of key jobs:

  • Structural work on the Morris (floor pans, sills the usual stuff)
  • Tidy up the k100 and give a damn good service
  • Gut the Morris of engine, gear box wiring and interior
  • Work out calculations for the final drive on the k100 and work out what differential will be needed for the conversion to the moggy rear end
  • Stick k100 engine and gearbox into the moggy
  • Get custom driveshaft and differential made and installed
  • Road test (on private road)
  • Roof chop and bodywork on the moggy
  • Add and modify electrics
  • Interior and paint 😁

Reverse wise, I'm thinking of doing the same as a goldwing and have a separate circuit to the starter motor that will spin in reverse just to get out of a parking space lol

I wonder though will that work on a K given the sprag clutch. I have a feeling the starter will only work one way. I am not sure but best check that out with those who do. Its just that sometimes an incorrectly assembled starter will run backwards but I don't think it turns the engine over.

Many, many moons ago when the K100 was the  sidecar bike.  There was a bloke in Germany converting the K gearbox so that one down was reverse, then 4 forward gears after that. Apparently using standard gears and a bit of machining.

only ever heard of it, read of it.  I know nothing else about it so no point in asking me more cause there's nothing more to be had.

Forget about using the K engine complete. Get the 1300 version of the Morris engine, and put a K head conversion kit on it. Then use what ever car gearbox you can make fit.

Ahhhhhh poop forgot about the sprag clutch ........ hmmmmm........... then possibly add another pully or something to the driveshaft that will be connected to a separate motor. ill have a look on the hillman imp forums see if I can find the guy that put a k100 engine into his see if he ran the sequential gear box like I wanna do or if he put a 'normal' box in. Unless I can find a way to change the sprag clutch.

Glad I joined the forum exactly for this reason lol otherwise I would have had a brain fart, stripped the bike and connected the circuit up before I realised hahahaha

I really like the idea of the sequential gear box though. And stick with full K engine as I know it'll be a lot more reliable then the Morris blocks.  My first one was a complete nightmare to get started in winter or even wet days, no matter what garage I took it to it was always a nightmare.  Sold it to a local guy, he uses it as a weekend summer toy these days

I had a problem with a car a few years ago, automatic and reverse became unavailable. For a while I had to choose very carefully when I went........German engineering....!

AvengerGT has the right idea. I knew that worked with the 1000cc engine but didn't know about he 1300 which I presume is stroked rather than bored out?

I wouldn't like to bet on the longevity of a K gearbox hauling the weight of a car around. I would also think the 6 rivet shaft wouldn't last very long.

I recently bought the bottom end of a 16V K engine from a guy who was using the head on a 1275 Mini and when I picked it up he showed me his various projects one of which was a 1275 with an 8V head and turbo which was producing 205HP at the wheels. One other project was grafting a CBR1000 6 speed to a mini engine, he didn't have it finished but it was a masterpiece of engineering.
You may be able to make a small transfer case to go on the back of the K gearbox to accommodate a reverse arrangement.
With regard to rear end maybe an independent rear end from a E30 BMW car, lots of ratios available for them and the complete transaxle sits in a frame with 4 mounting points.
I really don't think a K clutch would be up to the job.

What are you doing about reverse?
The easiest solution would be to mount the driver's seat on an axle and rotate it 180º when necessary.

I may have the solution  affraid
How about the gearbox off a K1200LT? They have a reverse built in.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0555-USA-01-2003-89V3-BMW-K_1200_LT_99_0545,0555_&diagId=23_0853

I'm sure the 1200 stuff bolts straight on to the 1000.

Yeah ouch on the price but will reduce the cost and headache of a drive shaft with a mid pully, brackets, belt and another startermotor.

The electrics is going to be the fun part although I have seen someone that was selling a gear selector board that replaces the oem clocks so I can start it in neutral without the clutch etc lol

Was shocked when I picked up the bike and he told me speedo didn't work so I thought with age of the bike it'd be mechanical cable until I looked behind the clocks and noticed it was full electric ohhhhhhh the joys hahahaha

I've got a set a spare clock set if you're stuck.
I would think if you shop around someone has a gearbox at reasonable money. IF...they're not a weak point on the bike and don't break there will be plenty about. I'm thinking that a K12LT gearbox would be strong enough too as the LT weighs more than a Moggie Thou!

I've got a 1200 bellhousing spare(as I have a 1200 engine to go into one of my K100s).  It will bolt to a K100 block. Post would be prohibitive I'd guess.

Think I've possibly fixed the clocks on mine, quick Google told me the connection pins in the clocks oxidise and lose connection so cleaned them up but haven't tested yet.

Did/does the bellhousing marry up correctly to the 1000? Does your original gear selector (LCD display) still work correctly aswel?

The help and advice from this forum so far has been absolutely brilliant, I'll keep a build update etc of all progress on this post ( providing I'm not breaking any forum rules as a lot of work required on the moggy and at this rate the bike stuff will be done a lot sooner then I anticipated )

The intermediate "bell housing" may not be required-I was just writing out loud! Smile
Buy a gearbox and try it before you start looking for other parts.
Having looked at this page on RealOEM you might be in luck.

Even better...is the K12LT is six speed?? It does bolt straight on but its not used on the K100/K1100 because the frame designed changed and the mountings don't work.....but in the Moggy that may not be an issue.

Starters and alternators are not the best located for a car BUT they are generally quite reliable especially if you look at brushes/monkey nuts/sprag clutch before outing it together. Definitely more reliable than the original.

Awesome, engine mount wise shouldn't be a problem as I'm going to make a cradle around the engine then mount it to the moggy using the exsisting engine mounts. The whole front end of the moggy is going to be a fibreglass single peace that will lift off to make working on it a bit easier and hopefully further down the line I want to turbo it if I can find enough information about the German company that did a load with turbos.

Task this week is put indicators on the front of the k100 and get it comfy and more road legal as the guy who had it before put stupid clip on bars on it and a pair of headlights with bright blue halos around them hard wired in ......... muppet to say the least hahaha

I had a VFR800 Vtec parked here for quite a while.

'Dad's new bike' my son said.........

Many ways of dealing with that issue of another bike.

There's also 'that K100 came with a spares bike' that you work out why it became a spares bike and fix in a few hours.

If you need advice on this subject on the forum there is plenty of it about.

You need to break the news that the K100 you got, because its an earlier one, may not be suitable for them plan and that it would be simpler to just get another later engine and use that. Then of course when you go looking for one its cheaper to buy a whole K and ride it home rather than getting a van to collect the engine.....

Do it the easy way and get a K1200engine and gearbox with a reverser and drop that in. An extra 20hp and no shagging about.

Hahahaha I like your thinking, luckily at the moment she really likes the moggy and what I'm going to do to it, she now has shown interest in the bike and been on back a couple of times. Sod's law she shows an interest when I tell her I only got it to use the engine and wiring loom.

Suppose I can always keep an eye out for another K bike and a k1200 would be perfect with reverse gear and sweet talk her saying it got it so I can keep the other one on road so we can still got out on it.

Don't think she'll be impressed when the choppers finished as it's hardtail with a single seat 😂😂

I'm really tempted had a quick eBay and could only find engine block and gear box separate. Sadly can't justify spending £1800+ on a complete bike just to strip although in an ideal world I would lol

Painted it Matt black 😁 Fitted front indicators and sorted the lights out so there's high and low been with no stupid blue halo round them.
Sadly though the speedo still doesn't work. I've checked the pick up on rear wheel and it's clean and cleaned the connections on the actual speedo as I read on here somewhere. Anyone got any ideas? Or is it fully broke. Everything else works as should although did get a warning light on the clocks (triangle with !) I think it was that one anyway lol

Also on the near side there's a socket just above the engine that's wired in somewhere any one know what's it's for??

Cheers again peeps

Are you referring to the auxiliary socket?  It's commonly used for connecting heated jackets and battery chargers

I believe there is an article about fixing a flakey speedo, where by they end up dealing with the connector up near the brake reservoir on the frame tube the fuel pump connector is also there, that connector often gives trouble.
