I'm packed and ready to head out, just arranging the panniers, chucking out half of what I 'think' I might need, and pulling on the rain togs as the sky looks decidedly dark out over Mt Rainier and towards Mt St Helens (the big one that blew back in '80), my intended route for the first coupla hours. I've got five days to ride down in to the Oregon high desert country. I wish I had my K to ride, but the R1150RT will have to do. There's an annual local Oregon club gathering, which I've not been to since about '06, called the Chief Joseph rally near the John Day fossil beds. The sun is forecast to be out after today. I've not had a scheduled day off except for a rare Saturday back in February. I'm due.

Pictures to follow.
Cheers.

If you stop in at the John Day Polaris dealer thank them again for bailing me out on my battery that pooched out.  You may remember the very same battery TWB, from last Aug.  It had a sudden epic failure as I passed through John Day.  "Rusty" at the petrol station gave me a jump start from his massive yellow 4X4 and directed me to the Polaris boys.  The battery is conveniently located under the fuel tank behind the Tupperware...  They took one look and pointed to the toolbox and said, "let us know when you have the battery out".

Clubbie, you only had to remove the left hand side fairing panel - thirteen T25 Torx screws and the two 3.5mm belly pan Allen heads - and the battery slides out from the tray after removing the two 10mm headed battery bolts and slipping the rubber strap off. Doh!

I had no time to stop at the Polaris dealer but I did see the shop as I rumbled past. This is only the fourth or fifth time I've been to the "John Day" rally over the twelve or thirteen or so years I've been coming to the Pacific "North Wet" region, and there were a mere 450 riders registered, a bit down on years past. This may be due to the fact that the "National" BMWMOA rally is to be held in Salem, Oregon in a month's time. There were a coupla dozen K bikes in various condition scattered throughout the site. On Saturday morning I was up early walking round with my camera and a cuppa while everyone slept, taking photos of them and the site.

John Day the town is named after an explorer from the Astor expedition of the early 1800s, and is nestled in a lush, green valley along the John Day river which threads through the John Day fossil beds region, with cattle grazing and ancient, weathered, very dry ridges and in the distance several thousand foot-high, snow-covered mountains (in June!) and itself sits at about 3,000 feet (915 metres) altitude. The area is dotted with thick pine forest and many deer and antelope (and elk) play there. Like many of the surrounding towns in the region there's a ranching/farming/outdoor activity lifestyle in abundance. It's a quaint cowboy town of the old and fading west. It gets into your bones. I love it.

It got down to 2c Friday night (with frost) but stayed warmer at about 10c (50f) on Saturday night. Daytime highs were 25 to 30c (86f) dependent upon where in the state I was.

I've much to write but little time, so I'll post a few piccies of the ride down, hopefully in sequence. It was a fine five day, 2000-plus mile ride with a half day of rain at the beginning and splendiferous weather the remainder. I wish I'd been able to have ridden my K100RS but it's still in a shed in Queensland - I've got my eye on a clean K1100RS at the mo' though.

Ta, K-Bike & Paul. I love riding over the Cascade mountains of eastern Washington and Oregon. There's not a lot of traffic, the roads are often relatively free of patrols, the terrain is much drier than the western parts of the two states, and the views can be amazing. If I get a mo' I'll post up some more piccies of last weekend's trip and tag them.

Cheers.

I rode often at 65 to 80 mph where the posted limit was 55 mph, and still achieved 46-48 MPG (US gallon = 4 quarts/litres). Premium fuel, sometimes without ethanol, is readily available. I saw few coppers.

I've eaten my fair share of autentica comida Mexicana over the years and have developed a taste for the real stuff. The Negra Modelo cut through, however.

Small towns are infrequent but about every 50 miles or less. Here's Fossil, where I often stop for brekky. A 'Mudders' convention was in  town. Naturally I assumed that meant a bevy of raised pickups with mud tyres all covered in debris. I was wrong. It's a group of hardy (and hard) folk who bushbash, run, swim through rivers, crawl over open ground and generally beat themselves up a bit in an endurance run. I saw young women with bigger arms than me and middle-aged men who looked like they had never stopped doing sit ups. I nibbled at my hearty country brekky and rode away making a promise to myself to eat less and exercise more. Pass me another beer, would ya!

A swayback piece of history at the side of the highway. Rural Oregon near where the Oregon Trail passed through. Think Conestogas piled high with the accumulated possessions of hardy folk; men walking alongside, longrifles slung low across their forearms, barefoot children, ladies in bonnets at the reins, and the nighttime circling of the wagons. All looking for a better life in the far West, Oregon country

Wineries and fruit orchards, windsurfing, skiing, mountaineering, railways and the meandering river which Lewis & Clark paddled down on their 1804-1806 trip. These are some of the varieties of industry and recreation in this region. It's an awesome place to ride through.

I covered about 2000+ miles (3200 kms) through Washington state and Oregon over the course of Thursday through Monday. The bike was flawless, as they quite often are, though it has covered 112,000 miles now (180,000 kms) and is nine years old. It returned great mileage and was comfortable to sit on for eight, nine hour days in the saddle. I added no oil to the sump.

If any of you mob wish to ride here I have a spare bedroom near Tacoma, Washington, and a secondhand bike for your riding pleasure. The best months of the year to ride here are May through late-October, although many mountain passes aren't open due to snow until as late as early July.

All of the photos shown here were taken by me on my four-year old cheapie HTC Android phone and filtered through Photoscape on my laptop.

I hope you've enjoyed the pictorial-travelogue.

Farm and county road speed limits are often 55 mph, for good reason; lots of livestock and wildlife to collide with, and sudden, decreasing radius curves with recommended limits of 30 and 35 mph (which we can ride through going 70 mph). State highway speed limits are usually 60 to 65, and 'Interstate' speed limits are 60 to 70 mph and beyond, dependent on where you are. I narrowed down the chicken strips on my Pilot Road IIIs considerably on this ride. There are far more curves than it would appear from my photos. Most drivers are humming along at fifteen over with impunity - too bad they've absolutely no clue which lane is for overtaking. They're worse than Aussies over here. There is no such thing as a designated and defined passing lane on American highways, to the average driver.

Only tourists attempt to make a snowman out of Spring melt ice crystals...

Chazza, when you need (who doesn't?) a holiday, get over here. Room, board and bike are covered. Premium petrol's about $4 per gallon, a cheap motel is well under fitty bucks, 'wilderness' camping is free in many places, a six pack of good stuff costs less than a tenner, and a basic restaurant meal, with tip, is often less than ten. And I don't mean Macca's.
Smile

Well someone has to make the sacrifice so if you all throw in $100 for my air fare then I will go over and make sure that TWB is telling us the truth and hasn't just photoshopped come crappy photos and is snowing us.
Just this week the offer stands for.

Beaut photos TWB.  I have friends in Portland who I visited in February.  Lovely countryside and trying to convince them to add two wheels to the stable.  We visited the BMW dealer and an independant, so still more work to do yet.

I wonder was it the Tigard dealer (BMW of Western Oregon), Cheshire Motorsports or Steve Prokop's out in Dundee? I helped open the Tigard shop in the Spring of '07. Nearly everyone from the original crew has left by now. We are selling genuine parts from up here in Seattle to the independents in Oregon, even the the City of Portland and the Oregon State Police as not many of them want to buy from the local dealer anymore.

Airfares are round about $1200 - $1500 one way last time I looked, Rick. $100 might get you a cocktail in cattle class...

I'll be home in October for a month-long spell at least, but as I have a nice house for two years, a job if I want it, and a stack of motorbikes to play with, I might linger a while...if the wet Winter weather is too much, the South West desert or Mexico isn't that far South.

Between Morton & Randle, Washington. Mt Adams in the background. This time I'm on my '06 K1200R, loaded for a few nights camping.

Here I am, four years on from this original post, heading back to John Day, Oregon for the Chief Joseph rally - a Nez Perce warrior/leader who famously said "I will fight no more for ever" when the calvalry hunted his struggling band of women & children down as they attempted to flee their taken-over lands for the safety of Canada.

I've fitted a Power Commander V, map switch and Autotune (O2 sensor) to the K12R and needed a good shakedown run to sort it out and create some fuel maps. It'll need a dyno run to fine tune but for now the hunting low rpm steady state cruise has been eliminated, the throttle is more rheostat, less lightswitch. The mileage was poor (33 to 38 per US gallon, but that might be down to Power Commander's safety margin of 20% richness added everywhere with a publicly available map download, but also my injudicious use of the loud handle, the load, the lower octane gasoline available at higher altitudes (91 AKI, or about 95 RON), the altitudes reached, the average speed maintained, and the high speed attained. The corner exiting grunt this fine motor has is seductive, it pulls cleanly and effortlessly away from anything bar a Hayabusa, S1000RR, KTM Super Duke or the like. Not bad for a ten year old lump. I reckon we're now in the neighbourhood of 170+ crank HP in a 525 wet lb (238 kilo) machine. I rode onto a cattle weigh at the roadside and with me astride, camping gear strapped on, full tank of petrol it read 749 lbs (about 339 kilos).

With the Mt St Helens/Windy Ridge national forest road still closed due to last Winter's heavy snow, I took White Pass highway 12 to Naches, turned south at Cowiche, made it to Union Gap then headed towards Goldendale, Washington. Here the wind farms have sprouted even more offspring.

Fife, Washington to John Day, Oregon (and back). Imag4312
The hay and wheat fields from the other side of Mt Adams. Highway 97, Goldendale, WA. The forecast for the weekend was hot and getting hotter. On Friday it was a comfortable high 20's, by Sunday it'd topped at 37c. With zero rain predicted I wore my mesh riding jacket & gloves over armoured jeans. The K12 rips! On one 'lonely stretch' my Garmin Nav V said 151mph. Surprisingly, the bike's speedo only indicated 155. Can we trust the satellites?  - All done off public highways, of course.

This view of snaking tarmac is the old-old highway 97 which is occasionally used as a bike/car road course (note the hay bales) known as the Maryhill Hill Climb.

Chief Joseph Rally, John Day, OR. At 5AM - average age guestimate 59 - this was a sea of log sawing. It was below 10c degrees that morning, going up to 35c+. About 400 attended. We are not getting any younger, collectively, us BMW riding rally goers. I met up with many old friends from my days in Portland, fifteen or sixteen years ago.

Fife, Washington to John Day, Oregon (and back). Imag4413
The sun rises over the hills above town. It was a dry, hot day with a million blowies and mozzies, with amazing views as far as the eye cared to see. The roads were fairly free of traffic for a Summer weekend, and I found myself on Saturday riding higher into the still snow-covered mounains.

Fife, Washington to John Day, Oregon (and back). Imag4414
Heading up a national forest road towards Magone Lake, I'd stopped for smoko and this was my view (No, for those who know me, I haven't taken up smoking).

Same road, wider view. Up here, the odd caravan or pickup (ute) passed by, but I mainly had the well-paved roads to myself.

Above Prairie City there's a row of rugged, still snow-covered peaks reaching over 8000'. This gravel road goes to Strawberry.

The sun rising over the canyon got my bones warm as the only riding jacket I brought was a mesh Spidi with a poly underlayer. I rode over several 3500' to 5000' mountain passes within the first hour heading home.

Fife, Washington to John Day, Oregon (and back). Imag4424
Highway 395 south of Ukiah, Oregon. I recommend this road. It was me, a few other rally-goers heading home, and coming the opposite way, a British car club with several tidy MGs, two pristine E-Type Jags, tops down in the early morning air, a fine-looking Sunbeam and a coupla three others I couldn't ID as they flashed past.

Overlooking Prosser, WA, a rich valley of orchards, cattle, vineyards and a river runs through it.

Back home now, three hot, sunny days, a thousand miles, a sweet running machine, plenty of fine roads, deer in abundance (as well as a skunk watching me pass from the roadside), old & new friends, and plans for more Summer rides to come. Which bike will I ride next time....

I'll watch for you Daz. I'm currently in Detroit OR on the 22, heading into Troutdale for the night. Tomorrow a straight shot north up the  I5 to the Great White North.

Clubbie, I'm not on the road anymore. I got home yesterday arvo, covering 400+ miles in eight hours, including Snoqualmie Pass in an Ellensburg to the Pass traffic jam. Were you at the rally? At least today it's ten degrees cooler for you!

I'll be in a white Audi A4 heading south on I-5 to work in Centralia tomorrow morning between eight and nine. Are you on your RT?

Heading south on Saturday it was 40/104* in Seaside right in the ocean. Hats getting warm enough. Yes RT but a newer grey 06 with trunk box. I'll be breaking off to Enumclaw to a coffee with family so may not see you, but I'll keep my eyes open!

No worries. Enumclaw is north and east of my departure point in Fife. Unless you take highway 12 off I-5 near Toledo, to Morton then 7 to Elbe, 161 to either Puyallup or the Kapowsin backroad through South Prairie to Enumscratch. Good roads, and beats I-5 Olympia & Tacoma commuter traffic in the AM.

I managed to attend the Chief Joseph Rally this year.  Pity I didn't meet up with you.  I thought it was a fine weekend.  The food was better than we've had in days past, the weather was warm but very tolerable, and the folks always friendly.  That area is hard to beat for fine riding.  The roads are well maintained and lightly traveled, so you can really enjoy being on two wheels.  And speaking of wheels, I was amazed at how few K-bikes were there.  I don't believe they numbered more than 5-6.  I didn't help the situation either, as I rode my pretty-new-to-me Kawasaki Versys 650LT.  The K100RS is too heavy for me to comfortably manage these days, so I found her a new home.  It wasn't long before I began to doubt that decision though....
I wonder how much a naked K-bike weighs?
