I saw this bike on Gumtree and couldn't resist going for a look knowing the outcome.
Off the road since 2004, not run since 2010 and a bit scruffy as you'd expect for a bike that's been outside for a while. It came with low seat, full luggage and all BMW liners inc top box and tank bag.
Anyway, the owner told me he'd taken all the fuel out of the tank but the weep hole in the top was blocked so there was 1/2 a litre of water in the tank but with a clean, fresh fuel and a battery it went straight away. The electrics are another matter with no speedometer and an indicator stuck on even with the power off. That was fixed with a new relay from my stock but despite cleaning every connection the speedo has quit but I had another 16v set with just 200 more miles on them so that's fine.
The brakes had black coffee inside with the rear empty but everything bled through and is OK.
The black on the motor, gearbox and back end is shocking and I'm tidying that up tomorrow.

That's actually pretty nice.  How would you refresh the black finish on the motor and final drive?

Rustoleum satin canyon black is a very good match for the OEM finish.

It's fitted it the first picture, I removed it for inspection/maintenance purposes.

They always look nicer in the pictures than they actually are. Last week I had a 5 hour drive (cross my heart and hope to die!) to look at a 18000 mile bike in the same spec and colour. It looked good in the pictures but it was rough when I got there and the guy neglected to tell me that the front master cylinder had leaked all it's fluid down the bike onto the engine-"It must have only just happened"  Yeah right ya stupid c##t!  I came home with an empty van but a full wallet, for a change.

I've used 2k satin black. Pictures later today.

I had that with a K100 some time back.

Photos looked good but were a few years old.

Paint was rattle can repaired.

Bits broken off it, cracked as in broken fairing, clocks cracked, panniers used as crash bars, no locks and lots more.

Best of all he didn't have the paperwork as in title. Didn't even fire it up or take it for a ride, went home minus a few gallons of diesel.

Sometimes you just have to walk from it.

The Wife wasn't happy driving all that way for nothing after I got her out of bed at 4:30am.

I'm trying to find enough parts to turn mine that shade of blue... I'm about halfway there.

4:30 am does not exist, it is a myth.

I used in on the RT frame in 2013 just after I bought it, left side was destroyed by battery acid and its extremely durable paint.

Can't recommend it highly enough and at the right temperature it gives an excellent brush finish.

Now, getting wife up at 4:30am to go look at motorbikes........not sure that's the wisest move......unless you then decided on the way home that it's a day off and go shopping with her in which case she may just encourage you to keep with the bikes....

My son is sorting me for collecting K1100LT today...he owes me!!

Just bought some Rustoleum for next time but satin black 2k is a great product.
Paint sorted on the main parts of the bike, the footrest hangers and belly pan bracket will be ready to fit tomorrow.



The lower case is just dirty-paint in quite good condition, just needs a clean.

Mike what is the "satin black 2k"?  I don't recognize that, perhaps it is geographically specific?

It’s 2 pack paint, that means that you get a coloured part (normally a  Ral colour) and an isocyanate based activator. When the 2 parts are mixed together they make a very durable finish.
This type of paint was available worldwide but with recent changes in the use of paint it may not be available where you live.

You'd have to check at your local paint supplier to get advice.

Footrest hangers done now too.

As there was another ECU chip included with all the parts I was given I decided to open up the ECU case this afternoon...look what I found.

An actual real, not a cheap copy, but an  original, genuine Harman tuning chip! Rumoured to be made from a Unicorns horn.

Thanks for your valuable input guys.

A K1100LT came to my place last week. Shed needs a bit of decluttering as it now will be housing a 92 K100LT, 84 K100RT, a non running possible restore 84 K100RS and a nice 97 K1100LT. Decluttering means getting rid of other stuff and making room for Ks.

The question is 
"Which one do I keep?"
Don't reply both, I don't have the space.

In that case... how about 'neither'. Sell 'em both and you won't have to make a choice!

Also under consideration because I have too many bikes at the moment.

Put both up for sale and the first to sell is the one you didn't want.

I know about that. I sold two last year and still don't have room to complete the three that are in varies stages of reassembly. Well, two are and the other is occupying a myriad boxes.

I've just been going through some boxes myself sorting spares I won't use-until I need them of course.

Looks like another eBay night coming up.
