Hello folks. Quick question. Have installed 2 red eagle eye 9w led lights that are a bit on the bright side. Can I dim these by installing a resistor in line? I would think it would work but wanted  to see what you guys thought before buying the resistors.

Thank you
Bill

What's the problem with being too bright? Where have you located them?

You can get adjustable dimming using PWM. (Pulse Width Modulation)

Not necessarily when one considers the current state of the US education system.

Are those spots before your eyes, or others' eyes? Spots in both cases could mean they are too bright. Spots before your eyes only could mean it's time for an eye exam.

Could be all the above. These are like little lasers shooting out from the back of my bike (which we all know is against the law).  Smile

Sounds exciting! Do you have corroboration about the laser effect—weeping neighbors, confused birds, whining dogs, frolicking cats—or are you the only witness to this phenomenon? I'd prefer to have tail lights that dazzled and brake lights that startled but I just don't feel the need.  The police will let you know if you're out of line with those things but as long as they're the correct color, you'll get off with a warning.  Laughing

FYI: They really aren't 9W. That's Chinese BS. They're actually less than 1W.

I run them on many bikes and have for years within any dimming. At a distance they're aren't blinding but they are bright enough to get the attention of people behind you. No law enforcement has ever stopped me.

The problem with most LED's is that the light source is a tiny point of very high intensity.

One trick to soften the light coming from them is to lightly scuff either the surface of the LED itself or the lens over it.  If the lens is removable, you can scuff the interior to keep the exterior nice and shiny.

Use a fine grit, 600 or finer.  The scuffing will diffuse the light from the LED lowering the perceived intensity and increasing the off-axis brightness.

Eagle Eyes are COB LEDs with about a 70 degree beam pattern - works fine for being noticed by the car behind you.

Duck: One of your posts is where I got the idea to use some LED's for this one. I did get the eagle eye's and they work well. I got the dimmer yesterday and have a very windy rainy day so what the heck? Might as well try it out.

.75: I don't think the lenses are removable. Good idea though.

Laitch: There is smoke rising over the city! Devastation everywhere! Godzilla coming in on the horizon and yes whining neighbors!
Well actually they just hurt my eyes....

Remember to have conspicuity lights for the front. They don't need to be as bright.

Unless those are LEDs that bike must have a HUGE alternator. What a Face
