So the gremlins continue to haunt the rebuild of my ‘83 K100. Odometer is now working after robbing some gears from my donor instruments however I’ve noticed that while the GPI screen indicates all gear positions, each image is now distorted and fat. Can’t think of a better way to describe it and I’m fairly certain this is a recent gremlin at play. I’ve not had the bike long, and only rode it home after purchasing it, and was aware then GPI screen was blank. I subsequently found a bunch of harness wires had worn through at the steering stem and when these were repaired the GPI screen worked perfectly.  I did notice that one on the earth wires has been squashed behind the cover of the two banks of pins at the back of the cluster, however I did a continuity test in both directions and all is good. Anyone come across this before.  Any ideas as to what I may have done?
Thanks.

That's usually a sign of a dying LCD screen. Do you have another one to check against?

early series lunchboxxes were really poorly ventilated (known for fogging up ) , so you could be suffering from slight corrosion sitting on the pads that the lcd connects to (through one of those flexible carbon compression connects )

if you have one of the later series meter housings (ventilated ) best to transfer the instruments over ????

Thanks Charlie, I’ll investigate that and see what’s going on. The cluster has lived under a Krauser fairing for the last few decades so rarely gets wet, however it’s lived near the coast for at least the last 15 years and while has absolutely no rust on it, there is always the possibility of electrical corrosion as it’s a very humid environment here. BTW the LCD screen on my donor unit is toast.

Hey Charlie, I pulled the LCD screen off and made sure all the connections were spotlessly clean. Unfortunately has not made any difference so looks like my screen is on the way out.

Good to lnow ....thanks for the update.

I haven't tried it yet but there is a capacitor near the lcd driver chip a low value electrolytic one   (10uF)
I had an inkling that if that cap dried out or became leaky it could affect the  , latch disable function on on the 4543 ...or reset on the 4060

Reason fo thinking this is on "reds" gpi lcd for the first few minutes there is a faint but definite display ...which disappears after a short while

Thoughts ?
In any case i have to exchange the trip odometer cluster soon  so will get a chance  to play inside .....
