Wise people........or members of the forum. I have 2 Ks..1983 and 1987. The lean angle on the side stand of the 83 is really starting to concern me. It was not an issue untill I got the 87 and did a comparison. Both stands seem to be the same length and shape but the 83 looks as though it is in danger of falling over. There are many minute differences between the two and I assumed this was another....but it is looking on the dangerous side...side stand that is.

G'day Ainsjac, I have a 93 K75 and the recently completed yellow beast an 86K100RS. The leaning angle on the 75 is much less than that of the K100. It seems the stands are the same but the leaning angle on the K100 is a worry. It may be the side stand bush on the 100 has worn more. Cheers Tom

The bolt and bush do wear very badly which is most likely the problem. My K1100 is getting really bad and looks like it's going to fall over.

the bolt holds the bush in place internally by clamping force between the two arms of the side stand ...if you have evidence that the bolt is worn ...then I suspect it has loosened allowing the bush to move about ...quite likely event

the stand itself interfaces to the tang that comes out of the base of the side-centre stand bracket ...the two arms on the side stand are the limit that the bush can move up and down in ...

what I have found is that the hole that the bush fits through wears a slight bit ...which in turn lets the angle of the sidestand change ...and wears the profile of the bush outer where it goes through the tang . remember that the bush should be the same or just slightly thicker than the tang ..not 1/2  a mm bigger in height ...maybe just a few thou .


the arms can wear the tang slightly and the arms also them selves ...over time allowing for a bigger gap between the arms and the tang allowing for sidestand lean

I think I mentioned this before

what I did was to grind - file about 1/2 a mm off the height of a new pivot bush ( so it had very little slop at all in its profile through the tang in both diameter and height ) which then let the arms of the sidestand pull closer to the tang with the standard pivot bolt ...letting far less movement happen at all in a verticle nature

I do have some pics somewhere ....did it a long time ago now ...and the lean angle has been far better since ...with little deterioration in that angle at all ... and sits more upright all the time  

ill try and find them ...but suspect the pics have been archived by now (on another computer )

Thanks gentlemen. I will pull said bits apart in the next few days. The bush in the orange one was renewed a few months ago....but I think the problem with it was the missing boomerang shaped plate that held the springs in place.

the boomerang plate has little to do with the lean angle stan ....more to do with retract only

When I got the 874 K100RT I had a little fun with that boomerang thingy. I took the bike for a test ride and the handling felt a bit off so I decided to put air in the tyres. Stopped and tried to put down the side stand and the damn thing wouldn't go down. Kept springing back up. I couldn't get off the bike. I gave up and went back to the seller and told him I couldn't get off the bike so he held the stand down while I got off. Anyway I did a deal but only if he could sort that little problem. There was a pin or bolt that the boomerang wrapped around and this causes it to retract when the weight is off the stand. He had to go find a hacksaw to cut it. Then it would stay down.

The later ones have a different arrangement, pull the clutch lever and the stand retracts. Much better.

If it becomes a worry there is a rubber attachment you can get that leaves a rubber 'prong' to alert you or push the stand back if you ride off with it down, there is one on my sons bike.
Check if you are buying some used parts as I think there was a change in the stands around 1986 and I don't think all parts are interchangeable.

G'day All, After my last post I measured the vertical distance between the two side stand 'bases'. The K75 measured about 110mm and the K100 measured about 125mm - quite a difference in the leaning department. So, I reckon worn bushes are the answer. Cheers Tom

I am now a little confused. I have looked at my orange bike and the stand and it is of a slightly different design ( the head that attaches to the bike) and has been modified with a welded bit.

that's a fairly large brace welded under the stand arm stan

and it doesn't look like the normal bmw supplied pivot bush

I wonder has some one redrilled and modified the bracket - and pivot bush off the centre stand chassis ?

The pivot bushes are the same sizes. Orange bike has the best angle sitting on the side stand and I want the red to be the same. Tomorrow I will catch up with a mate and a press to straighten up the stand and get a bush made up. There is little wear in the bush...in comparison to the old bush on the orange bike..which was changed a few months ago. Should I weld a brace Charlie? I only use the side to stop and get off...always onto the centre stand...too many unimpressed people who cop the smoke if I leave it on the side.

sounds like a plan stan

yeah go for the brace as well if you straighten the leg of the stand ... I have a feeling that the bent leg is all about geometry and strength for the materials used

you might remember that I went to the k1100 type stand ...and I would consider that the angle of the bracket had changed just slightly

something that might prove hard to replicate to a k100 subchassis under the gearbox (I guess there is some heat involved in getting the angles to lineup )   and then tempering to get it back to "whats right " with adequate strength after .

just hope it lines up with the side stand and centre stand rubbers on the exhaust bracket to stop vibration


don't forget the bush can be too wide thick for the bracket ...measure it ...and if not, file to suit for a close fit.
 I remember having about 100 mm of movement vertically whilst deployed in the sidestand unloaded to loaded ...and have got that back to about 30 mm or so

Yes Paul I do remember the puck solution. Should know a bit more about the straighted solution soon. I wonder how many stands bend a little over time...mine is 32 years old and I can only account for the last 15 years. Obviously the previous owner of my other bike had an issue and welded a brace.

I'm going to try that The jaws of mine are definitely splayed from wear. I've tried squeezing them in the vice and even building up the inside with weld then filing it back, neither solution last very long.
