If it's not an original pump it may be worth checking the pump polarity.
It's impossible to get it wrong with the original due different size connectors, but a double check can't hurt.
Remember, cheap stuff first!

John

I only thought of it after you mentioned the pump so its your credit! The Clymer Manual highlights that point.

Would i be correct in thinking that this valve was not used on my bike? Would it be worth pulling the pump apart, maybe its guming up and is struggling to work?

Not sure on a K1100. RickG can say for sure. As for a gummy fuel pump, some of us have reversed polarity to flush it out. But do that in a bucket, not the tank...

Pumps changed after 1/93, Gerard, so yours would be different.
Do not try to pull any of the pumps apart. It will cost you a new one.
Several of us have tried it with faulty pumps and I don't think any of us have been successful so far.
I think the pressure used when they are pressed together is crucial to getting the tolerances correct.
Everything feels like it should be ok but when you crimp it back together, nuffink.

I was coming up the road tonight from work with a devil on one shoulder shouting "you can do it, just whip her out and pull apart" and an angel on the other saying "you have been down this road before, dont do it, it will be a disaster!". So I will go with John and the angel and leave well enough alone! Thanks John

Check the plug to the tank may have to stretch the pins maybe a simple fix ie no power going to pump /bad earth

Check the rest of the pins on the ECU, mine did that when the water temp sensor wasn't connecting. Thanks to this forum I got it sorted.
A new set of plugs works wonders too. A trip to Halfrauds with my trade card, 4 NGK's for under a tenner Very Happy.

Have you got a clean blue spark, and have you tried to dry the spark plugs

I have a spare ECU here. I got a replacement in June from Motorworks and took out the old one. Everything said it would not cure my problem but when I changed it the problem went away. I am assuming either it was faulty or faulty connection. However I also redid earths at the same time without checking so am not certain if it is good or not. I did open it and it was clean inside.

Is this beginning to sound like you will make 29th??

Sometimes bike would start. I could hear fuel pump running even though no start. The problem with no start was even the starter did not work, when it did start it would cut out after a while and then not start. I did strip the starter to eliminate the problem but my assumption was that a fault in the starter would not cause a cut out. In any event I did strip and clean the starter as well and also replaced the relay. I got the relay from Maddocks but it took 2 weeks, Motorworks generally arrive in about 3 days whether you are buying new or used.

I never really understood the problem because the advice was to look elsewhere than the ECU. It was cheaper for me to buy a replacement ECU from Motorworks [£50] than pay for testing the one I had [€75]. When I got the replacement I spent a long time cleaning off the contacts with a 1200 gauge wet and dry used dry until they looked nice and new. These contacts have been flagged here for attention. I now think the problem could have been a poor contact from one of the peripheral points such as Hall sensor, crank or camshaft sensors or whatever making some other components appear to be at fault and the simple action of removing cleaning etc etc may have cured it.

Yep, seen that happen, good to hear its running again. The Mini conversion guys recommend the same plugs as a Mazda rotary to stop that behavior but I have not got around to trying them yet. BTW my lunch box removal is almost complete so two Kerry K's will be running again. Very Happy

I should mention when I got the K I gave it a full service, all filters, plugs, brake fluid, rear master cylinder seal, clutch cable and a lot of other little jobs. Not so long after a strange problem developed. Poor starting, poor running etc. Turned out one of the new plugs was faulty. Replaced it and problem cured. I now find that is not uncommon with the plugs used. I got replacements in Halfords, now travel with a spare.

Let me know if all is now up and running for 29th.

I must make some arrangement with Corkboy but a meeting point at Fermoy or Mitchelstown [say 9.30am] would work out ok for all of us. Mallow Mitchelstown road has been closed for some time for road repairs in which case Fermoy is better option. Unfortunately Bjorn is still off road....bike is fine, it got better faster than Bjorn.

Hi Darren,
I suggest you run through the fault finding flow diagram which is on this site, a lot of members contributed to that so as to give a logical process for sorting out issues to generally be able to settle on what is causing the problem, the idea is to eliminate items step by step instead of the flailing around we all tend to do to sort a problem with our bikes.
Regards,
K-BIKE

To check this circuit measure the resistance between connector 10 and 13 at the jetronic multiconnector.
You should read ~4K ohm at 10oC.

This RT ended up being my 'new' K. The fuel pump sure is noisy and the non return valve does not work because when I had tank off at the weekend petrol flowed out and I had to plug the tank spigot. It is also very noisy.

Everything worked fine and bike started and ran fine. Today I went out and bike cut out after less than a mile. Immediately suspected absence of fuel. Refused to start again but after a few minutes it started again only to cut out a few minutes later. Having repacked the tool kit to ensure I had all the tools needed I decided to remove tank at roadside. Took off left fairing knee panel and tried again, noticed no fuel pump sound. So went at the connector to the tank. Wriggling it made the pump stop and start- cause of problem. Anyway I looked at the connector and crimped up the connections to ensure a tight fit. Problem solved. This problem of an intermittent connection has clearly existed for a long time and could explain some of the history. Bike running fine again. A lot of other little jobs done since I got the bike.

Anyway that's my update!
