Monday I bought my first ever BMW. It's a 1985 K100RT that needs plenty of TLC. From what i could find its Baja Red (I think). I expect to be asking a lot of question in the coming months as I start to bring the bike back. I'll take a few pictures this weekend and post.

The one thing I've noticed already is that it seems to be tough to find parts. Even the basic gaskets and grommets used during fluid changes. Will the BMW dealer end up being my main source?

Look forward to getting to know everyone.

Welcome to the forum.

Don't worry about parts as they are available from the dealer or on line. There is plenty of them for sale on Ebay too.

Don't worry about price as you can find them quite cheap.

Welcome dmanley! I've had BMW cars in the past but I just bought my first BMW bike also and I love it! I'm sure you will too! What I have found through the K100 forum is that depending on what you need there are a few different sources for parts. Don't worry, you're in good hands here!

Welcome to the forum dmanley, you will find that the BMW dealer is the place of last choice for most of us here as we much prefer to use our hard earned stuff for riding. Almost all the parts you require for regular maintenance are available without going to a dealer and the members here know where to buy at very good prices. First BMW 177912

Welcome aboard. Parts?

beemerboneyard.com

kbikeparts.com

motorworks.co.uk

motobins.co.uk

ebay.com

Also, depending on what you need, RJtrucker on this forum seems to have somehow cornered the market on USA used parts.

You will not have any problem sourcing what you need as long as you have a computer and a mailbox.

Thanks for the parts sites Club_C. That's really my main concern now. I'll also post a few pictures this weekend as I get time. Doesn't look like much now but hopefully I can correct that!

Another +++ for RjTrucker on this forum, as a source for used parts. Right now, he is in NJ, and recovering from the storm. I talked to him about an hour ago, and he's been without electricity for a week. Running a generator to get by.

But he's 100% fair and honest, and has great prices. And he really cares about keeping our K-bikes on the road. Great guy to work with.

+1.

I've just bought the same w/56K miles and am now in 1st winter maintenance cycle. Already made my first mistake buying the wrong clutch cable, but it was an emergency road repair and I didn't have the time to do the research properly. FYI: There are two kinds, one for mid-high rise handle bars (mine) and one for the low-rise (sport bike?) handle bars.

Anyway, congrats on the bike purchase, I think you'll really like the experience.

Thanks AJ. I started replacing all the control cables and fluids and that's escalated to stripping the bike to the motor. I should have it completely disassembled this weekend.

I don't plan on doing any heavy engine maintenance other than replacing all external seals. Everything else will be rebuilding all components, new parts (control cables, clutch, plugs, plug wires, tires, shock, fork springs), fluid changes, electrical contact cleaning and piainting. I hope it run when I'm done:)

I was in Portsmouth last June. That's where I went to Middle school and High school.
