Hi all my K100 now 27Hi all, thought I'd pop in and say hello with a couple of pictures after a long lay off over the winter. I haven’t been able to do any work on it over the winter because this year I laid all the bikes up over the cold winter months and the garage was just totally crammed full - couldn't move, and besides that I'm getting to old for ice and snow now.

I've started back on the K100RS again now hoping to have it on the road this year.

Here's a couple of pictures taken the other day. Not too bad for a bike that was written off. I have a belly pan to fit as well, it just isn’t on yet.

Its not mint nor will it ever be, its just something to tinker with as I have other bikes. I haven’t ridden it on the roads yet as its not legally roadworthy, but soon I hope it will be.

Have to fix the digital gear indicator now, its only showing gears 4 & 5 even when in neutral, and now since the layup over winter, the starter motor wont operate unless the clutch lever is in even though the bike is in neutral. I'm hoping its just a diry switch or connector.

Morning Dave,
Don't quote me, but pretty sure the starter won't work without the clutch as it has to have the neutral light on before it will believe the bike is in neutral.
Hence the need for a working gear position indicator switch.

A few threads on here to guide you in the cleaning and dismantling process.

yes cheers, I think it is that. I had the speedo off to replace a broken mounting lug (one of those alloy funny brackets) and I'm wondering if maybe the wires going into it are stretched or something. No matter what gear it is in it only shows the digits 4 or 5.

But meanwhile I'll rout out these posts as no doubt this may be a common issue and see if I clean clean the switch

HI.

It is what it is unfortunately. I don't have the money, time or skill to restore it. I took a major hit last year trading in 3 motorcycles (one of which I swore to the devil himself they would have to bury with me when my time comes) in order to have something 'new and modern' before I hang up my boots.

I can appreciate the purists here will be probably be offended at it but, at least I kept it from being 'spare parts'

Even after it spat the contents of the cooling system all over me whist on my back looking for an oil leak and I ending up in hospital with very serious burns!

Despite all that, and this being probably being one of the most troublesome bikes I have ever owned.....

Hi all

Well I managed to fix the gear indicator, no neutral light and it not starting without the clutch lever in....

I took the speedo apart as I needed to replace the dial lights anyway they were all out. When I took off the big connector at the back of the speedo there was some slight corrosion on the pins on the back of the speedo. I cleaned the pins and the socket up then washed it in WD40. Seems to have done the trick as the gear change digital indicator works now whereas before it only showed 4 or a 5. Got my neutral light back and it also starts without having to have the clutch lever pulled in so quite happy about that.

I took a couiple of more picures as I fitted the belly pan. I painted it and the 2 side panels with aerosols. Not a good job really but a little better than they were before as they were all scratched and cracked.

I also notice a noise on idle, its a whining whirring noise.

I did a short video of it and uploaded it to YOUTUBE, but not sure if I can post the link here without breaking any forum rules.

Is this OK to post it here? Don't want to get into hot water, thought I'd ask first.

OK fine guys, if its the norm then I wont worry too much. It sounds a little like my VFR with gear driven cams

Hope it works as I'm on an old MAC G5 power PC that doesn't support the flash plugin (a version of Firefox called TenFourFox) so I cant preview it unfortunately.

If it doesn't I'll have to edit the post on another PC later.

Have a listen to the sound of the noise coming from the center of the engine.

I'm hoping now your going to say its not much to worry about, as I don't think I have the skill/confidence if the motor requires splitting to fix it.

The only thing that sounds dodgy in that video is the scouse accent. Hi all my K100 now 652573 Very Happy

Thanks to all who took a listen much appreciated Hi all my K100 now 212902

I'm feeling a little more confident now. Being used to JAP 4/6's with wet clutches it just sounds totally different, that's why I made the comments on the clutch being in/out. Sounds a little like my viffer with gear driven camshafts except this has a chain doesn't it?

I thought it may have been a thrust bearing or the likes on the main output shaft or similar but don't know this engine. Was a little worried it may have been a big job but if its the norm very happy about that now.

I have a few jobs to do yet before I can take it for its M.O.T (UK annual inspection) test. One of them is the main stand, it barely retracts when the bike comes off fit. It may just want the pivots greasing don't know yet havent investigated it further. An other to synchronize the throttle bodies. That'll be interesting never done an injection bike before although done many a 4 and 6 cylinder JAP engine without issues.

Later on I'm going to remove those pannier rails and top back plate and make some to fit GIVI boxes as I have several sets of almost new GIVI panniers (E41 and E21), so might as well use those rather than try to get hold of a set of K100 panniers (they don't go cheap second hand do they), or I just might leave it all naked. I'd also like to fit a small fly screen and some fork gaiters as well but we'll see how the rest goes for now. Just hope it passes its MOT so can get to ride it soon, just hope I can get used to those very narrow bars affraid. But its come a long way from the day it was dropped off in the back of a van and I'm quite pleased the way its turned out so far considering every things been done on a shoe string budget bar having to buy 2 radiators as the first one I bought (a K75) was too narrow and I didn't know that at the time, and of course the catastrophic accident last year when I ended up in hospital when the radiator spewed its contents of high pressure water and steam all over me whilst under it looking for any oil weeps after rebuilding the oil/water pump. I had a lot of help on that one from the guys here as well as the temperature module was also blown, but I managed to fix that. What a great place this is Hi all my K100 now 723598

Just got the new air filter ex UK, they seem far less resistance the the original, probably 27 years old I wreckon?

OK no problem, when I do it I'll take some pictures and try and do another short vid maybe if any ones interested in how it goes. I've never done an injection bike before but I cant see the procedure much different than a bank of carbs. I can see the vacuum take-offs blanked with rubbers on the side so it should be reasonably straight forward unless I'm missing something. I'm sure someone will let me know if its otherwise. We'll see how close they end up.

I took off the centre stand to grease the pivot bolts. The left had leg bottom where it touches the ground had a split in it so I welded it up and filled it with stainless rod with the tig set. Inspecting the pivots I was amazed at how much slop end play there was. I couldn't get the bolts out even with a HD impact gun. The 8mm hex headed bolts were on the point of rounding. I didn't have a torch to heat them up so gave up in the end as someone had been there before me as there were chisel marks on the sides where someone had been using a chisel to try and tap them undone. I greased them up good with moley grease and put the centre stand back To my total amazment ALL of the slack and slop end float on the pivots disappeared once the 4 Allen hex bolts holding the stand to bottom of the engine casing were tightened up mmmmm... cant quite figure that one out Question Still the stands back now, its very stable and it now retracts reasonably well when the bike comes off it. So a little further down the road to riding.

I had problems extracting the pivot bolts from my centre stand so I took it to a muffler shop which heated the bolts with an oxy-acetylene torch until they were bright-red hot. They came out no problem but were scrap afterwards. There's Blue Locktite on the threads that seizes up the bolts over time.

You are probably aware already but you ballance the TBs by using the big brass screws, don't touch the connections between them or you will have a very difficult fix on your hands.

The road conditions, like salt etc, really hammer under bike metalwork. The R1100RT I had in the UK, 68000miles, had a stiff centre stand when I got it and it completely siezed near the end of the tour, despite WD40, and oilimg attempts as the mounting bolts were siezed too. Nearly flicked me off once. amazing a grease nipple or 2 may have been a goer, may do mine when I get there. some old brit bikes had grease nipples on the centre stand swing arm etc.

My 85rs has grease fitting points included, but the left side fitting hits something when it stows away and rips the fitting out of it's hole. Do they have a special fitting that goes there of do I have something above the stand out of alignment?

Yes your right on that one Rick. I used to have an F650 that had grease nipples on the centre stand, real handy that.





My 85rs has grease fitting points included, but the left side fitting

Just wondering if it may be the side stand retractor mechanism, does the 85RS have one, I don’t know. This is my first K series. There is a rod and 2 plates sitting on the LH side under the stand. Could it be that?

Do you mean the linkage screws when you say connections? Rick G? If it were a bank of carbs it'd be easy. Just find the reference carb and sync up to it. I had the balancing on a Valkyrie I had last year down to a tea on a back of 6. But yes I take your point and will study this before I go charging in.

Good job there was no gas left in my blow lamp torch then I suppose or I more than likely would have ended up with the same issue. I gasped in horror when I saw how much play and end float there was once I took the stand off. The 4 mounting bolts holding it on came out dead easy. Still stunned that all the play totally vanished when I put it back all greased up. Weird that one.

I did the throttle body adjustment the other day, I didn't take any pictures but I did another short video of my first time on an injection set-up. It was a lot easier than a set of carbs for sure.

Anyway here is the video, its not intended as an instructional vid, just my efforts. The second clip on the end is when I moved the gauges from the speedo onto the back seat. I noticed a lot of flutter on the needles when on the speedo. This is usually caused by poor damping in the gauges but theses are DAVIDA gauges that have a built in damping system and are not cheap, so I thought should not do this (they never did it on any bike before). So when I picked up the set of gauges the needle flutter stopped so I put them on the back set. That's the only reason for the added clip on the end. Its not a brilliant 'block buster' as I did it on my phone but it tells the story OK I think.






On another note, I took the K100 for its M.O.T test this afternoon and it passed. So now its road legal Hi all my K100 now 723598 Hi all my K100 now 723598 Hi all my K100 now 723598

A couple of pictures I took today of the k100 after adding a home made flyscreen and luggage.

I seem to have collected quite an array of boxes over the years.

The flyscreen is an old CBR1000 screen inverted and the Givi racks are from a 1200 Bandit choped and welded to suite. The mirrors are from a Suzuki B KING. Indicators are Honda CBF600

Quite pleased the way this is comming along considering what it was when I first got it.

Hello Rick, yes its comming along OK considering what it looked like when 2 blokes wheeled out of the back of a van last year. I remember saysing to myself 'what have I done here'

After having issues with the oil/water pump rebuild, and then the cooling fan not working because of a burn-up in the switching module and a duff sensor I was about to call it a day. I was talked around by a member (may have been you or Charlie cant quite remember). I'm glad now I stuck with it.

Dont know what it has this bike, it has something [because I have a faultless 96 VFR750 AND a brand new (last year) FJR1300 in the garage], I still keep taking this old tank out (well it feels like one compared to the other 2). Very Happy

I just need to get some fork gaiters on it now I think. The last ones I purchsed wouldn't fit and I end up butchering them try to make them fit in the process.

I think Mottobins or Mottoworks here in the UK may be able to help so I'll try them next and see if they can supply a pair that will fit as I dont see any on Ebay.

The paint job isnt brill as it was just aerosols but... it does give me a big grin when I take it out, and I'm getting a little more acustomed to the very narrow bars so I think I can live with them now.

Have you tried Gaiterman? You're looking for a gaiter compatible with the Rancho RS1952 gaiter (which is a close fit).

I think Mottobins or Mottoworks here in the UK may be able to help so I'll try them next and see if they can supply a pair that will fit as I dont see any on Ebay.

Very nice mods to the bike. I have always enjoyed using bits and pieces of things laying about in the garage to fix my projects. For each project I have a binder to keep expenses and what bikes the parts came from in case of a part braking on the bike (A.D.D. maybe ?). Its nice to look back and figure how much I saved on each project using ebay finds that fit.
I went a different route with my tank, I stripped the paint off and buffed her up. I think it gives the bike that "British Cafe' " look. But one thing about the tank bothered me, the lower crease on both sides with the hole in it. It just did not make the bike look finished, so I taped off the upper part of the tank and spray canned the creased area with the same black paint as the engine and frame. If you stand back a few feet it disappears...that's when I begin to grin and check-off one more item that nagged me.

Just catching up with this thread, your work is paying Dividends Dave, The bike looks well and from the sound in the videos is running sweet.

Hello Gaz. Took me a while to be able to post pictures and I still struggle now and then to some extent.

Once you register you host the image by uploading it by choosing 'host image' from the icon above the message pane. hover your mouse over each and it will tell you what they do.

Thanks for the link. They are a little dearer than the motobins ones Inge K sent the link for. Not worried over that. I'm just wondering that I think the motobinns ones are genuine BMW (well they quote a BMW part numbe rfor them) so they *should* be better quality one would hope. How did you fix them to the fork legs? with jubilee clips or cable ties?

Cant polish my tank I'm afraid, it had a leak bottom LHS, I had to epoxy it. Thanks for you comments.

Yes its comming along quite well, even the eldest lad (who thinks he's another Rossi) is starting to pass reasonable comments on it now so it must have changed significantly since I first aqcuired it.

The other thing I wouldn't mind having a go at is crash bars front and rear (cos I'm an old git) but dont know if the belly pan will stop that on the front.

The side stand mechanism no longer works now since I took the main stand off to grease it all. Not really worried too much about that though as I try not to use it since I read that they apparantly dont like being over on the LH side as the oil seeps over or something causing blue smoke on start up so I read. So I always try and use the main stand wherever I can. When I first got the bike and got it started it smoked like a victorian chimney for days, wicked it was. Then it all cleared. I guess it must have been left on its side stand for ages.

I did my first full fuel analysis the other week. I got 149 miles on 13.7 LTRS. I think thats around 48 MPG, which if it is isn't bad considersing its had a few big handfulls on the throttle Smile

Had a look on the web for the Motobins gaiters - look better than mine wish I had seen them first. I used cable ties at the top and tight fit at the bottom didn't require anything to hold them in place.

Kill the engine before laying it over onto the side stand. And don't start her up until you are sitting upright. Goes a long way to avoiding the blue smoke.

Let the engine tickover for 8-10 seconds before switching off, then you can park on the side stand and there will be NO smoke, ever.
When I fitted a set of fork gaiters to my last K I found it worth drilling several small air holes on the top fold, out of sight. If the gaiters are air tight they can blow up like a balloon when the forks are compressed.
Ever see an older bike with gaiters looking like a pair of saggy knickers? Now you know why.

Good looking project.

The gear indicator on my bike is doing the same 454545 thing with no neutral light.  I hope the fix is as easy because the switch is now a very difficult thing to access because of the sidecar mountings.  Will try this weekend.
