Hi Gang -

So, my "new" 1985 K100 came with both paniers and the 22L top case from the previous owner. When I got the K, it spent a lot of time in the garage in pieces so I didn't think much about the cases. I recently pulled the top case off the shelf in the garage and tried to open it... without any luck. It appears to be locked but my ignition key doesn't unlock it. Since it's an 85 and the paniers have those weird style Gen1 keys (which I have one of) I also tried that one, no luck.

Any idea how to pop open this top case? I'd love to be able use it. Maybe i'm doing something wrong with the way I'm trying to open it? Stick the key in and twist is what I thought, but perhaps there is some magic trick?

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Pac

My LT came with a brace of panniers. Two lock for each lid and one to sceure to the bike.

A couple of locks are fine. And the rest don't want to rotate! The only way to open them is to jiggle with the keys in untill the whole lock comes out!

I cleaned them and lubed them but they still don't rotate!

So I'm in the dark too, but can empathise!!!

This thread.

Probably more info than you care to know about panniers and keys.

And probably still won't help you open yours.

pac ....perhaps the ignition key isn't keyed for the top case ?

we all get out stuff where we can ...and invariably the top box lock may be from another bike ?

just a thought

but check ibj s explanation pics for position of the lock

Put it on the bike and put some really important documents in it and go for a ride. Then you can just about guarantee it will come open. Ha Ha

where are our smileys?

Was the top case on the bike when you got it?
Mine was a bit of a bugger to open too. Sometimes the lids get a bit out of align or the previous owner adjusted the catch to make it close tight. Try placing it on the mount, press down on the pad on the lid directly over the latch button. Depress the button and hold it in then try lifting up .
