I have been enjoying my re build of the k100, the best part is being able to do bits and still ride her.  However yesterday on the way to work all the oil dumped out of the rear shock.  It looks original so kind of expected.

The main issues is this is not my main mode of transport, in-fact I can walk to work that is how close it is.  It is just more fun on 2 wheels.  So I do not need a top of the line fix for the shock.

Do you know if you can ride this kind of a bike without oil in the shock, what are the safety / wear / comfort issues?

I have contacted the UK supplier and it will be around $550 delivered to AUS a recommended option however more than my budget for this build.

A shock rebuilder in QLD can do it for around $250 excluding postage up and back.

So after my questions above, I am looking for feedback as to what my options are, ie has anyone got an old shocker that would fit my bike and give it a bit more life until I can upgrade to the better option?

Thanks I am having a great time and find everyone on this forum a great help.

Without oil your shockie have no damping  ie. bad road holding.

Rick G. have a Ikon for sale.....a bit better than one w/o oil.....
don't remember if it was mono or paralever. Try to send him a PM.

I recently purchased a RAM rear shock for my 1990 K100LT from Realm Engineering in the UK. V.good to deal with and an excellent product. Cost me $473 Aussie sheckels landed to my front door.

Troy, I have one sitting around gathering dust.

It's from an '86/'87 K100; doesn't leak, nice and sort-of-shiny and black. Spring goes boing, so you should be good to go.

It may pay to replace the bolt where it attaches to the swingarm while you are there. A couple of the forum folk have has issues with that bolt snapping leading to more than one set of skid marks.  Shocked

PM me.

I have a 1987 Koni from my project bike I could lend you cos it will be a while before needed. I only rode the bike 2 kms slowly (other issues) so have no idea how good it is. If you are in Taperoo SA you'd be more than welcome to try it, up to you.

Thanks, what length should it be and I will check the one I have.  Being new to the bike I am not sure if it is a 16v or not.

G'day emp69 , I've got a 1987 K100RS , eye to eye length of my shock is 355mm , it has a monolever rear end , I'm not sure if the 1992 K100 has a paralever rear , if yes then the required shock is longer than 355mm

can you post a pic ?

JR

Nah looks like a monolever rear , so the offered shocks should fit Ok , looking at the bike & the "Y" spoke wheels it looks earlier than a 1992 , but I could be wrong

I have the original one I took off my '91 K100RS.  It only had 36,426 miles one it when I installed the YSS.

You can have it if you want to pay shipping to Aus.  Probably a little cost prohibitive.  Let me know

I didn't know there was a difference between 1991 and 1992.  The photo I looked at must not have been a 1992.

Correct..... the signature field says -91, which I believe is closer to the truth.

2V models have monolever, 4V's have paralever and a longer shockie.

My stuff up, it is a 91, not sure why I put down 92, must have been thinking about my young bride at the time  Embarassed

Good news is now I know I have a 91, 2v, monolever, k100.

Very happy camper....  Thanks to blaKey I am now back on the road and loving it....  The rear shocker turned up so well packed it took me 5min to get it out.. and I was all prepared to spend the night cleaning... nup this shocker is the cleanest part on the bike.  So a big thank you to every one for the offer of help and blaKey for the no questions "here have this part to get you going".  I just hope one day I will be in the position to return the favour.
