Mixed some old gas in a plastic jerry can with half a tank of new gas in an attempt to get rid of it, and...
1) Smoking
2) Backfires
3) Evolving engine rattle..getting worse
4) Loss of power...
I think the valves might have suffered......
any pearls of wisdom?   Old gas/new gas 177381

Maybe the injectors have deposits....

Not more than four, but no younger than 2! Not exactly sure.
I read somewhere that the only way to dispose of old gas is to add it to existing gas, and burn it off. I would advise anyone reading this NOT to try it!!...certainly not in the case of a 1988 K75S!

I use stuff like this in my chain saw, modern additives do not work well as a fuel, OK as a solvent but not worth the agro in an engine.

I guess I'll have to remove the valve/rocker cover and inspect. May need to remove the head to clean it and reset the valves. Blimey....!!! I'm kicking myself!!!

Seriously mate, I doubt it's that bad, drain the old stuff out of the tank and start again.

But....what do I do with the old gas? Back to square 1! Will have to get shot of it somehow, but council say they don't take petrol.
Is there some kind of additive that can help clean the valves?

Unlikely you would damage valves that quickly, pull the spark plugs and clean them. 
Give the gas to a car driver or put it in yours if you have one.

You wont have damaged anything except maybe the spark plugs. Old fuel doesn't burn and will usually not even start even with fresh fuel added.  Add it to fresh tanks of fuel about 1 litre at a time to get rid of it or leave it outside on the footpath and some mug will steal it and have their car conk out on them just down the road and you can go take the piss out of them for stealing it and make them buy you a fresh can. Very Happy

That Archoil stuff looks interesting. Have read up on it, and they have a product that may work if added to the gas. Good idea..or just drain off/clean plugs/new gas??

That's the way to go.

Put the old stuff in a can at the back of the shed and use for cleaning

Find a neighbour that you don't like and then late one night use your creative spelling talents to write something witty on their front lawn.  That is if you have more than a couple of blades of grass at the front of your house in your piece of London. 

Works a treat, especially for words that children should not see.

Speaking with a mate of mine recently in the automotive industry and his comment is that all 91 Octane in Oz has a shelf life of about two weeks and is crap.  Hence I use 98 in my bikes.

I have had the old fuel trouble a couple of times after winter storage (some day i will learn ) .
the bike simply would not start unless i used the diesel start , i then aplied  the lead substitude i use during the summer , and after draining the fuel rail ,and a few more tries ,bingo  cheers it started .

worked on the lawn mower too.

I sometimes wish I was Australian, just so I can buy products like that!!! Nice!
Anyway.....old gas drained....new gas in just now....starts up  but running ruff!! Smoke out back...uneven idle...and knocking still. Should I keep running it (as the remainder old gas passes through the pipes and is burnt off) , or what else is a good idea? Old gas/new gas 8157

Looks like I am only firing on one or two cylinders at mo. That would explain the smoke and occasional backfire. Would that old gas block up the injectors? Is that the most likely culprit?

I would be cleaning the injectors and new plugs if you haven't already done it. Even cleaning the outside of the coils can be a help, I have seen coils with tracks burned across them come back to life after a good clean.

Any consistency in which two cylinders are not firing? Just after you try starting up feel the headers and see which ones are cold. If 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 as pairs are cold then you have a coil issue, but maybe a connection and not the coil itself.

Very Happy Cleaned and gapped the plugs. Cleaned injectors...new gas...sorted!
