Sometimes I just cant get myself out of bed and I find it very difficult to get started...

Sorry wrong list.

Went out for a ride today, 480km loop.  Somewhere along the way I began to notice a noise in the driveline, not loud but noticable.  Nothing on drive but always there on the over-run while slowing(off throttle). I tried using different gears but it made no difference to the level or frequency of the noise (so the gearbox is unlikely). Leaves the rear drive or the driveshaft as the source.

Once I got home I felt both my rear drive casing and Maries R1150R for comparison.  The RS rear drive housing was hot, Maries was just very warm.  I dropped the oil into a clean container.  The magnet on the drain plug had a good coating of small metal chips, the oil looked like dark grey metallic paint but didn't smell burnt at all.  So it looks like at least one bearing has failed.  I'll pull it out tomorrow to check the spline condition before deciding to rebuild(not in my skillset but I have people who can help) or source another replacement.  Hasn't had a bad life though, around 150,000kms, around 110,000 of that with the sidecar.

If I have to source a replacement it also gives me the chance to fit an RT unit to lower the gearing (better for sidecar use).

Anyone know where I can find a decent K100RT rear drive (aluminium finish, 20 spline)

Al

RS to RT will give you about 3%. Have to make sure you get 20 spline.
RS to K75 will give you about 11-12%, K75 is 20 spline and a straight swap. Might be worth it for sidecar use.

Its an 87, the drive is original so its 20 spline.  I've run RT gears before, they suit just fine.  K75 would be too "revvy"

Looks like my splines are knackered too.

Option 1- Replace rear drive and driveshaft.  I've found a matched pair, done 11,000kms, seller says splines are as new.  $450. All sounds good, just not sure of the price in todays market (ie you guys have turned me into a tight-arse)

Option 2- Strip the existing rear drive, get the pinion spline and driveshaft spline repaired.  Does anyone have any idea what $$ Bruno is looking for this repair.  I'll have to add new bearings into that one.  The time isn't an issue

Option 3- ???

Al

Bruno will want somewhere $750 - $800 plus freight both ways and that would be about $100 each way.
Have you tried Graeme Jones at Bega or Ron Falconer at Budgewoi 02 4390 4838 I just got a good Tank from him for $100
Ron has quite a bit of K100 and K1100 stuff.
One other potion is a 2.91 gear set from a paralever and cut the pinion shaft back. Check it out, I think the spline is still a 20 on them.  PJ was putting a Paralever gear set into a Monolever housing for his rig.

G'Day, Just had the driveshaft spline replaced by Munich Motorcycles. Cost $300. The splines were ordered from Germany and welded on by someone at MM.Great job. Took about three weeks. The UJ seems to be fine so did not replace. Cheers Tom

I have been rummaging through the internet trying to find where to get the splines at close to a reasonable cost.
Still waiting for replies from a place in China who have a very good reputation for making that type of thing.
Motobins have the splines for 55 quid which is a touch on the extortionate side considering the process for making them and heat treatment.

Rick: have you tried Motorworks? I've found there's a substantial difference in prices between the two, plus Motorworks do s/h stuff too.

I am looking at buying 100 at somewhere around $5 each or less which is about the price Motobins would be paying and they are getting away charging 55 quid because they are the only game in town.  There is nothing I like doing more than spoil some greedy buggers exorbitant profit margin.

I'm getting the drive and shaft from the 11,000km RT this Friday.  If you do get the spline repair bits in, I'll have a shaft worth fixing up.

I'll hang on to the buggered RS rear drive, but with a bad bearing and badly worn pinion spline I cant see what I'll do with it in the end.  Shelf decoration.

The final result is good, the splines were just as the seller said, just like new.  i gave it a good dose of 50% moly grease on installation.

The RT gearing is about where I want to be, it now pulls away much more easily in first with no need to slip/feather the clutch at all and the revs aren't too bad at freeway speeds. I haven't tried it with the trailer yet.

The overall reduction from stock (2.81:1 and 130/90 17 tyre) to now (2.91:1 ratio and 155/82-15 rear tyre) is around 8.6% more revs.
