A 53 year old Greek journalist, (twice married, no kids) says hello and wishes everyone the best!
In search of stability (in an unstable country) and a firm grip on how things should roll, (which they are not at the moment) I opted again for a BMW, this time a K 100 LT (1988). (Plus, the likelihood, of having to buy one soon in Drachmas instead of Euros weighed on my decision...).
As far as the make is concerned, I started off -a few years (decades) back- with an R 27, (fitted previously with a side car), moved on to an R 60/7 and then on to a R 100 RS. Regretted having sold any one of them, for a series of different reasons...
Thus, this one, I will try to hold on to....
Despite its size and its age, it is a handsome beast. Spares (second hand) are hard to come by, in my neck of the woods, and one of the reasons I joined this forum is exactly that. The very day I bought it I trashed the left mirror and was lucky enough to have found one -of the two- being sold in Greece currently (please laugh your hearts out...). So you can imagine what may happen if we move on to more serious spare parts...
So -to cut a long story short- this is who I am. A middle aged guy, living in a ruined land, holding on to what ever is worth holding and can still be saved.
Nice to be with you!
Nick Drossos

Hi Nick and welcome to the forum. Don't sound so down, its not all bad. The K is a great bike and lots of spare parts around for now even if they are outside Greece. I feel in good form, just been out for some of the afternoon with my son, two bikes, sun out, a ride along some nice coastal bits, time for an ice cream and along chat by the sea. And they say Ireland is as bad as Greece.

Everyone on the forum is very helpful and happy to share knowledge so don't be afraid to ask questions.

Hi Nick, welcome from Australia.

There are many of us here in Australia who import most of the spare parts that we need from the other side of the world (your side) though it's mainly due to cost reasons but also sometimes availability. Even if we were prepared to pay the high prices that the BMW dealers charge they usually don't keep much stock on hand for our older series K bikes.

You will soon see where the forum members do their spare parts shopping. I've never been to Greece but from what I can see from afar you will have many delightful roads to ride and generally good weather to do it.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum, Nick
One of the beauties of the K100 is the ability to be able to adapt components from other makes. I doubt if any of us have ever bought an original BMW supplied fuel pump.
The last pump I bought was on eBay and was from a Peugeot 206, cost me about 13 euros.
There's currently a thread on the forum about if it's possible to use a VW Beetle clutch in a brick!
Things sound a bit grim there, but at least the sun is shinning.
It's shinning here, too, but it was only 8C this afternoon.
At least you have your K on the road. Enjoy.

Hi Nick,
Welcome from down under, I get most of my bits from the UK, motobins and motor works  as they are much cheaper than down here. Just ask the forum as there are some fantastic people here willing to help.
Cheers
Mike

Hi Nick welcome to the Knuthaus
Good advice is to use a piece of stainless fishing trace to stop the mirror falling all the way to oblivion.

Welcome along Nick. Your Name remids me of the Guy Richie Film "Lock, Stock and two smoking Barrells", there is a Character in it called "Nick the Bubble" (short for Bubble and Squeek, it's a Cockney rhyming slang name for Greek). Wonder if you've seen it? I digress.

Your economy may be in tatters but you have the gift of wonderful climate, hills and coastlines which are perfect for the K so go out and forget the recession and enjoy the K. Forum members are always quick to help with advice which make the running costs of a K affordable.
