I know there are 2 types of mirror fixing the later ones having a spring clip pushed on via the indicator lens opening.
Does the earlier one just hold by interference fit between the metal c clip on the ball stem and the tube it sits in? thanks for any help, john

I decided to fix this backing plate myself. I drilled a pilot hole into the shaft and screwed in a filed down self tapper in stainless. I made the clip from a bicycle spoke. Not pretty but it’s not seen and works. Result!

This is how I modified my mirror pods, I removed the plastic insert from the mirror holding ball and drilled and tapped M5

Then I cut away part of the 'reflector' so that I could access the screw with an Allen key.

Now, whenever I need to remove a mirror, I just undo the screw and pull the mirror out, it saves a lot of hassle (and broken mirrors!).

Paul.

The only downside with that mod Paul is that the screw could get stuck in the ball joint and then when trying to undo it would, knowing my luck just spin the ball!

Actually the ball spigot has two flats that locate in the shaped hole in the pod chassis so it can't rotate.

Paul.

Thanks Paul, I noticed the flats but thought the pod side was just cylindrical. I will look a little closer in the morning!

Just before I took the bike off the road for some gearbox "I have no idea what I'm doing" work. I went for a ride and I noticed that the mirror was vibrating a lot. I reached in to touch it doing 80ks on a country road and the bugger just flew off.........I spent the next hour searching the long grass on the side off the road looking for it. Must of looked sus, some bikey looking guy walking in long grass staring at his feet. Two elderly ladies came over to see if they could help. Had a happy ending we found it, unbroken. Now I have to work out what parts are missing the put it back in......

Was it just the glass or the whole thing with the turn signal?  You can still get the clips that hold the mirror pod on the fairing.  They seem to lose their grip as they age(don't we all?) and new ones tighten things up nicely.  They are a bit pricey, but much less than a new mirror assembly.

Im still trying to work out how to remove the glass

Tried the slam down method no luck ( must be weak )
Tried the cable ties method ( chicken out )
One day will get the trim tool or see someone who has the skill
