Hi all,

I have a question hopefully someone might experienced.

I had to clean sprag clutch as stoped working was gunked up. Works fine now.

While I was in there I put new bearing and seal in bell housing. I used a normal 6004 c3 skf bearing.

Put all back together and started sounded nice quite compared to old bearing. Ran it up road and after about 1/4 mile start making noise in bell housing area, so turned around and then few yards further the bike seized.

Luckily I have had loads two strokes years ago and still ride as habit with hand over clutch. I was on few yards from.home.

Took all.apart again and the bellhouse/alternator bearing has seized solid. Seems be no oil in the area as well.

This has baffles me and not sure if bearing faulty or I did something wrong.

Anyone have any ideas. How does this bearing normally get lubricated.

Plenty oil in bike as just put it in.

I have ordered a new bearing etc but don't want same thing to happen again.

The bearing is blue with the heat. I did not put any extra oil when I put in in. Should I have done this?

Any assistance I would be grateful.

Hopefully then I can get back on road in nice weather 😁

I recently did the same job on the K1100LT Changed the bearing and seal but I did put a little oil around the bearing and spun just before mounting the the intermediate flange.. I have 300 plus miles up since without issue. I'm not sure the oil would have made that much difference as it was 2 weeks before I turned over the engine due to a major refurb of the bike. so the oil would have been wicking out.

Sounds like it could be an alignment issue. Was the bearing definitely seated square?

Thanks for the reply.

I thought it was square.

When I put the new one in I will have to make sure it is.

I will then run the bike for a while before I ride it.

Feel free to correct me but isn't this bearing spec a sealed bearing? NBR seals I think which I believe are good for a about 100 degC.
Is it supposed to be an open oil bath bearing?

I did put open bearing in and I have ordered a new open bearing too which I hope will work this time.

I have checked everything else and nothing seems to be wrong.

I will go through all again and hopefully it will be running soon.
Very Happy

Out of curiosity, is it possible to read the bearing number in that picture Laitch? Looks like a 2004 or similar to me, but I can't read anything.

The bearing number I had was 6004

I have ordered one and expect it any day.

I will make sure I put back together and see what happens.

Hopefully was a one off.

Thanks for all suggestions.

It's raining today anyway so can't fix it anyway.

That's what I actually meant to write, not 2004. Same size as the wheel bearing for the cast wheels on Tonti-framed Moto Guzzis. That's why I thought I recognised it.

Hi all just to update.

I stripped down the seized bearing to replace with a new one and found weird situation.

The thrust washer on end  of sprag clutch assembly had actually got so hot it melted to end of sprag clutch shaft and then snapped off.

I have bought used complete assembly and will replace the whole lot.

Weird was not expecting that, oh well thought I would let everyone know.

I will keep updated once it all fixed Very Happy

Yes number two in diagram. And it took tiny bit of shaft with it.

Very weird. But at least I found something wrong.

Nothing worse than trying work out what it is any just guessing.

I will.update when it is back together. Hopefully soon as missing summer.
