After many hours this bike is pretty sweet. Love the way it rides. Love the way it looks. Hate the center stand! Still working on the pulsating in the front brakes. That one is kicking my butt. All in all I will have $1500 into so far(I stress "so far). Not bad for a quality bike.

Personally im happy to find a pulse  Very Happy Very Happy. However in this case its more  likely to be Warped discs, On a previous mot this was found to be the problem on my K .When they have stood for a long while, the pressure of the pads can MARK the discs, causing the pulsating You may be able to clean them up if you very lucky  Cool Cool
When the bike is on the brake testing rollers and brake applied if its MARKS on the disc or slight warping the bike (HOPS) And this is a fail Sad Sad

Thanks for the replies! How would you clean the rotor? Steel wool and brake cleaner or something else? I have another set of wheels with rotors on the front wheel. I may give that wheel a shot. They have tires on them but will need replacing. I also have new brake pads I can put on.  I also have found the bike to get a little squirrely at times during slow speed corners. At speed she handles nicely. It's a nice bike but I am learning they have some "things".

Cleaning rotors .Use an Angle Grinder with a floppy disc ,to get best results .Poor Handling on Ks. The main culprits are TYRES, Old,miss worn under inflated. 2 headstock bearings if the grease is old and dry this will give the steering a wobbly feel at low speed Very Happy Very Happy have fun

With afloppy  disk? You mean break open an old disk? Never heard of this. Have been looking at tires. These are old.

I had a slight pulse in my RS. . . . changed the wheels which meant front discs off and onto a different wheel. Pulse gone, so incorrect as in slightly uneven mounting can also do it. Make sure the mounting points on to the wheel are really clean. But more likely to be warped discs.

What are the optimum size Tire  for a K100? 

When this thing is decelerating it feels like it want  to shake itself to pieces sometimes and sometimes it is much more slight. I will check the mounting locations.

Jack up the bike so the front wheel is off the ground.  Grab the wheel at the 6 and 12 o'clock positions and shake it to see if the wheel bearings are loose.

Spin the front wheel and watch for any wobble in the brake rotors.

Turn the handlebars from side to side feeling for any free play or notchiness.

Finally, take the front wheel off and have the balance checked.  You would not be the first person to have a wheel weight or two come off the wheel.

Check all the fasteners on the forks for snugness.  Then, you might want to loosen them all and go back and tighten them in sequence to remove any front end stiction.

The OEM sizes should work well enough but there are successful alternatives and a site search will turn them up. Here's an owner's handbook from late 1984 to look up specs.

Read some of the posts after a search. I changed the tire pressure from 36 to 39 in the rear and 34 to 36 in the front. Was a great improvement. Was much better handling.  Now when I get rid of the pulsing I will put new tires on the beast. I have to work all weekend so won't be digging in to deep yet.

Took her to church with me last night for Good Friday services and showed her off. She got awesome reviews! Smile

Yeah, 38F and 42R are the internationally recommended pressures for brick tires.  They seem to work on all models, with all tire sizes, in many weather conditions and riding environments all over the world.

I have been riding it around a good bit. It is really starting to impress me a good bit. A very fun bike. Will be glad to get new tires on it. 
Will be exciting to have some new adventures on it.

If you are on a tight budget and not into dragging the pegs in the rain you may find that Shinko Tourmaster or 712's are a good choice.  If you can do your own tire changes you can get a set(front and rear) from Chaparral Motor Sports for less than $200. 

I have run 8 sets of Shinkos on four bikes for a total of over 65,000 miles with no complaints.  For the money, I think they are the best bargain in tires if you aren't a tire snob.  They handle well in wet or dry and have good longevity, easily running 8-9,000 miles on the rear and 12,000 on the front.

Looks like the pulsating brakes was the rotors. Swapped the front wheel last night and now they are smooth as silk! Was going to replace the Pads but the ones on it are close to brand new. I have a brand new set of  EBC pads but as long as the ones on it are smooth and not causing any issues think I will keep them on for now. Are the Y rims tubeless or do they need tubes? My tires should be here any day and want to be ready to have them mounted.

I am happy to drag the pegs in the rain and had some quite spirited riding on the RS at the weekend . . . . . with the trailer on. I like my Battlax BT46, great in the rain.

I am going to see how I like  them. The rear was delivered today. Don't think I am ready to start "peg draggin" yet though. Been a while since  I was there.

Fishboy:  I too am working up a K100 - Mine's in RT dress, 20+ years in a barn, mostly in tact, runs great.

However, it's blue.  I like RED.  What color is your bike?  Factory color or something after the fact[ory]?

... and a postscript - your comment about the low speed handling is familiar.  Mine, having sat for 20+, had dried out the steering head grease.  The bearing felt "worn-in" with what felt like detents.  

But, while a PITA to fix, the bearings were undamaged, and a good cleaning and greasing totally fixed the chunky handling.  Hardest part was finding a socket big enough to loosen the big nut.

 The bike has been repainted from Alaskan Blue to this red. The PO said it was called Porsche Red. 
I like the red also. That being said the blue isn't bad either.

 My problem was a terrible pulsating in the front  brakes. I have replaced the wheel with a spare I had. The rotors only had about 10,000 miles on them. Became smooth as silk. 

  Next decision is weather to go tubeless with the new tires or not. I am no peg dragger by any means so not sure it really matters. I have read about issues both ways.

Will do.  Regarding "porsche red" - I'll bet that's "Porsche Guards Red", the same red as an airplane I helped rebuild - "Big Red" it was named.... favorite color!  

Glad you skinned the pulsating.  My tires are very old - what was found on the bike.  No checking, no wobbles, and no confidence.  Let me know what brand you put on front - will probably change mine before riding it much

Many years ago i had a total deflate of the rear tyre ,Instant cure for Hameroyds. Since that time iv had Puncture proof product added and to good effect, saved me on a couple of occasions well worth the money Very Happy Very Happy

This is the first BMW product I have owned. Not familiar wit all the aspects of the machine yet. I read some stuff about bead separation on the snowflake rim. Read a little more today that is saying that the rims were early where the incidents occured. I probably won't use tubes but was looking at what I can find on the subject. I also ride Bicycles and all of my modern bikes are tubeless. I do get the benefits of tubeless.

She went through the Maryland state safety inspection today with flying colors. All legal and ready to roll. Getting my Batlax BT46's installed on Tuesday. Should be about it for now.  My 1985 K100 now after much work. 212902

Oh good! When I lived in Kentucky 'bout twenty years ago, they'd never heard of the words 'safety inpection'. No state transfer inspection, no nothing. Just re-reg. Some interesting vehicles on the road....

Well they have figured out that folks will die in some of those things. Still see some pretty crazy things out there though. Maryland has one of the toughest inspections around. Was a little worried about it but after due diligence she went right through! Am very happy with the bike at this point. Still under 2k on it.

Many states still don't have inspection and the disappointing news, fishboy, is that some folks will die on a thing like yours, regardless of its mechanical condition.  Sad

Yes That is a risk that you know when you throw a leg over one of these machines. I rode for 35 years and went down a couple of times. I will say that if by making it mechanically sound I can lower the risk I am for it. Batlax BT46's going on on tuesday. The old tires passed but I don't trust them. It has actually been kinda fun getting to know the machine a bit. She is a pretty well behaved machine and I am having an interesting time so far.
