Got the brake handle, i.e. the right hand side handle mechanism with brake and throttle complete, that's in pretty sad shape. Lots of aluminum corrosion, paint flaking off, and nasty looking solidified former brake fluid. Any suggestions as to an appropriate solvent to help clean it all? I've taken it apart and was thinking to just dump it in a can of gasoline and scrubbing.

I would start by soaking for a couple days in water and Dawn dish detergent followed by a scrub with the wife's toothbrush(never use yours, the Dawn tastes terrible).  Then you can decide what additional needs to be done.

Now that is a recommendation. May I assume it is based on experience? Unfortunately I have no dawn. Would Ivory or Simple Green do as a substitute? Or tomorrow I could go and get some Dawn if that's an absolute necessity. About the toothbrush. Unfortunately she took hers with her when she dumped my aging ass. Wink Perhaps I could use the cat's? He really doesn't care for it in any case.

Dawn seems to do the best job.  I think it has the best surfactants and detergents.  At least that's what my chemical engineer daughter told me.

Get the small bottle at Dollar Tree or Dollar General.

Be careful with the cat's toothbrush.  Those little furballs have the idea of killing and eating you in the back of their mind even when things are going good.  Who knows what it'd do if you pissed it off.

HFC!!!  It's a buck and a quarter at the Dollar Tree.  And it smells a lot better than diesel fuel.
