Hi all,
I want to install a used pump into a tank. I’ve been told the pump works but would obvs like to test that it spins before installation.

Do I have to set up a ‘wet’ environment or can I risk a short dry burst of 12v to check?

I've dry run fuel pumps many times. No issues. It doesn't have to be a quick burst run either. I usually run them for a few seconds.

FYI: The smaller diameter terminal is 12V and the larger diameter terminal is ground.

I had an issue last September and had a fuel pump that was known to work as in I took it out of another K and it was working fine. However when I swapped it in it had issues yet tested perfectly. I ended up putting a brand new one in.... www.tills.de was my source. If the tank inners are all original then the terminals can only be connected correctly. You need a 7mm and 8mm spanner for them. Be sure to have the pump pushed all the way home in the mounting damper.

Obviously, the benefit of a wet test is you know it’s pumping, not just spinning. But spinning (dry) is a great first test.

 I successfully wet tested one of mine previously using some spare hose and a small container of petrol…just make sure the electrical connections are tight (not sparking) and, need I say it(?), test well away from any ignition sources!! No prizes for burning the house down.

My used one had been running fine but as precaution I replaced it with a new one because I was getting them cheap as in about €40. The used one tested fine, ran fine, pumped fuel but it just wasn't getting sufficient pressure. Problem solved with a brand new one.

I must admit some parts I don't buy used. Fuel pumps, discs, brake bits, switches etc etc

I test them wet with a pressure gauge and valve. Restrict the flow with valve to get 50 to 60 psi and make sure you still have reasonable flow of fuel. If you really want to be confident in the pump put an amp gauge on it as well and make sure it's not drawing more than 6 amps under load.
