My new RS is going to be living in France and so I need to change the headlight. Hedlight ordered from French fleabay and on the way so I have set about taking the old one off in preparation. Jeez, what a PITA! All the fairing sides and bits of trim had to come off so that I could work out how to get the light and eventually the whole fairing had to be drawn forward to get it out.

I suppose I would have to accept that it is well put together, but doing the same job on my R100RT took 30 mins to complete. It has just taken about an hor and half to get the old one out and I fear that putting it all back will take longer.

At least I am getting to know the bike:D .

Yes mate that's the upside of all the aggravation. When you finally sit back and say "I did that myself". Then you can be the expert when another newbie comes along. Seems to work well.
Why do you need a different headlight for France? excuse my ignorance, do they have different rules?

The reason for the headlight change is that it is not symmetrical!

The beam has two distinct halves - on an on-the-left, right-hand-drive bike, the right half of the beam is flat on top, as you'd expect from looking at the lens.

The left-hand side, pointing away from traffic, is domed, so the light shines higher away from oncoming traffic, to give you greater visibility at night or, in Australia, to spot possums.

Cool, huh?

Headlight arrived today. Reflector not quite as perfect as mine. Althought then lens could in theory be swapped over to my exisitng unit wher the reflector is mint, I can't do this as the bulb is held in a slightly different position so I will have to use the reflector as well as the lens that I have bought. Lighting will posibly be a little diminished but it all relative. The last bike I rode in the dark a couple of months ago was my 1951 BSA B31 with 6v lights. That was interesting!

The BSA doesn't dip the "right" way as it has an English light but I don't think anyone noticed as I would struggle to blind anyone even on hi beam.

Dunney, in some states in Australia each vehicle must undertake an annual inspection for roadworthy certificate. My first bike was a Honda SL 70 with a sealed beam...6 volts. The high beam part of the bulb had blown and I was asked to show high beam working. I sat on the back of the bike and the weight made it look as though I had a high beam. To get it back to low beam I got off. The inspecting mechanic realised that at that time no one had any 6 volt stuff any more and that the Honda was not a speed demon...so he let me through. A candle was brighter than the bulb.

I just removed the fairing on my RT to replace the parking light with LEDs.
I was ready to remove the whole fairing and decided to try something different. It took only 1/2 hour and all the lowers stayed on the bike.

Headlight change Fairin10

- remove the knee pads, glove boxes and the dash board on the upper fairing.
- Remove 3 screws (#1)
- Remove 4 screws (#2)
- Remove bolt (#3)
- Remove 4 screws (#4)
- PULL THE UPPER FAIRING AWAY FROM THE BIKE Very Happy

This way I avoided to remove the driving lights mounted on the crash bars, the crash bars, side panels, radiator shroud and rubber parts around the fork tubes.

This is quite a substantial time saver particularly if you have to remove the top fairing on the side of the road.
