Gosh darn, I need to rebuild the starter on my 1985 K100RT, sent my wife to the local BMW dealer for a "Brush Set" (part # 12 41 1 459 567). It only included one brush, B+.

I couldn't believe it. Called the dealer and confirmed: yes, the official BMW name for this part is a Brush Set.

Missing is the B- brush (ground) that is on a special plate in the starter motor. If you have a Clymer manual, on page 295, it is part #8 in the exploded diagram of the starter.

I've just spent a couple hours poking around the Internet, and cannot find this part. I'm in CA, USA. Anyone know where I can find this part?

I don't want to fix the starter with only one brush! Help!

What they should have sold her as well is part number 12 41 1 459 297 brush holder set.
It's item 13.

Thanks! You're right. At least now I have the part number. But I can't find it anywhere.

Any idea where I should start looking? Thanks!

pretty standard and cheep stuff for our bikes ...... see what twb produces ...shouldnt cost an arm and leg ...quite reasonable even from gb .

you will need part #11 and part #13 to do the job properly as the base plate brush seems to wear the worst and the springs seem to gum up .

good luck !

I got the opposite experience about the brush wearing.

Did change mine first time at 190.976 km, then the positive brush was worn down (not to the service limit, but still to short to make good contact...or the spring had weakened over the years...the length was 8,35 mm).

The negative brush was only down to 11,85 mm....the new brush was 12,05 mm.

Just for the comparison, the worn out one vs. a new one.

I can't remember which way round it is but motobins and motorworks in the uk from one you can order both as a set and the other sells them both individually... It works out cheaper if i remember to by them both individually as well!
