Hello,
I recently bought a 1985 k100. The theory is that it will save the price of purchase in fuel in one year. The plan is to leave my tools at the job site (except for my nail bags because that's where I keep my brains).
My commute is 85 miles each way and custom made for a motorcycle (Highway 166). So far the motorcycle gets about twice the mileage of my pick up and it is at least twice as enjoyable to drive.

Previous motorcycles : a couple of street 350s and a Honda Goldwing GL1000 .
Most of what I know about this motorcycle is from the Internet (lots of studying).

I'm here to learn more (plus it is too rainy to ride right now).

Hi and welcome to the forum

There's more info on the BMW K series on this site than you can shake a shaky shillelagh at.

Get yourself a good set of waterproofs and keep riding

Lets start with I love my K bikes. But anyone who thinks using a bike as a commuter vehicle to "save money" does not own a motorcycle. Actual cost per mile on most full size bikes is more then the cost to drive a small car. There are a few acceptions to this but the K bike is not one of them. The joy you get from riding is worth the cost but don't do it just to save money. Cost to maintain a bike is not cheap. Especially if you can't do it all yourself. And even the do it yourselfer will find things can get costly real fast. 4 tires on my Chevy cobalt Mounted and balanced cost me less then $350. And will last me 60,000 to 70,000 miles. Tires on my K100 cost me the same and last less then 10,000 miles. Same goes for oil filters and spline lubes and anything else the bike might need. Ride to work and enjoy the ride. It is worth the cost. And let's not forget those warm evenings when the 85 miles home turns in to 150 miles just cause it is so much fun to ride.

Here, here, RJT, nicely and succinctly summed up.
Welcome 85K100 too. This is a good mob.
