I finally brought my first BMW a 1984 K100 just before Christmas as a project, she had been sitting in a shed on a farm for about 10 years, and looked like it too, loaded her onto the trailer, and on the way home stopped at the car wash, after quite a few coins I was amazed at how good she looked, then there was the down side, getting a bike that hadn't been moved in ten years back on the road, so that's why I joined the forum, the information I have gleaned from the forum has been very helpful and knowledgeable, I pulled the battery out topped it up and put it on the charger and It actually charge up and holds a charge not bad for a ten year + old battery, then I drained the fuel out, tank is as clean as a whistle, tested the fuel pump no noise so i took it out, filled it full of crc 5.56 and it worked, so now only a oil, coolant, brake fluid, change, new plugs, new fuel pump collar, and pray the injectors work and i'm ready to try and start her, as soon as I find a hill, the starter sprag is not working either, I hope it frees up with new oil and a run, and that's pretty much it. All the work I've done has been from what I've found on this forum thank you. Vic

Vic,
Sprag clutch, suggest you use flushing oil first as these get sticky. Usually nothing wrong with them. I bought a K75s cheap because he was worried about the work cost etc. I knew it could be cleared by flushing and it gave me no further trouble.

I still feel guilty for not telling him. However he was a stranger and not of this forum.

Welcome by the way.

Hi Vic welcome to the funny farm.
you said you used a pressure washer, not a good idea the water has a habit of getting into the ECU computer so it may be a good idea to open it and dry it in the sun. I have seen two recently fry due to water ingress.
If you go to the portal section you will find a "just bought a K bike what now". it's a good read full of top advice.

Welcome Vic21
take Rick G s advice and read that section, it's a real help. Most of us just want to get on the road and ride but a little work and cleanup first can stop lots of problems.
I use a Diesel oil every 3rd engine oil change, the detergents in it seem to clean a whole lot of gunk out, especially first up, and that helps the sprag thinggy.

Welcome Vic21!

Help us to help you by going to the top of the page and click on the Profile tab, then look for Signature.
This is where you can type in what model you have and the year (plus
some wondrous wisdom if you want to share it with the world).
This way, we can offer specific information about your bike.

If the battery is that old (and even though it seems to hold a charge), I would take it to an auto electrician and get it tested to see how "strong" it is.
If you don't, there is a chance that you may weld the contacts together in the starter relay when you try and start the bike. If that happens, the starter will keep on turning over and flatten the battery. Not good.

Enjoy you time here. Stay on the look-out for local rides and trips.

Hi Vic,
Great to have you with us and good on you for resurrecting an 84. As for oil get yourself a really good quality oil designed to be used for diesel and petrol engine and then change the oil and filter (use a genuine BMW filter), fill the bike with oil and go for a really long run (bump start required sadly). After a 100K+ of long run as a minimum stop on a hill and try the starter, you may well find the sprag clutch has freed up and you can start normally. If not roll down the hill bump start and give it another 100 K the benefit is you will get to know how the bike feels and rides. Change the oil and filter at half the normal interval using the same oil as before. Then after one more change at half the interval your engine should be nice and clean inside and the sprag clutch functioning normally.
Regards,
K-BIKE
